They are known as one of the biggest gas-guzzlers of them all — giant in size and a fixture in many celebrity garages.

But the infamous Hummer has gone green, producing its newest and smallest road car, which is also completely electric.

Costing around £10,000, the MEV Hummer HX can be driven around for up to 100 miles and has no carbon footprint at all, meaning it is exempt from the London Congestion Charge.

Carbon-friendly: While its giant sibling drinks vast amounts of fuel, these electric Hummers buzz around silently for hours on batteries

Tiny: At only three metres long and 1.5 metres wide it is in marked contrast to its giant brother

While its giant sibling drives around drinking vast amounts of fuel, these mini-Hummers buzz around silently for hours on batteries, without so much as a sniff of petrol.

Captured on the capital’s streets, Hummer’s little brother is only three metres long and one and a half metres wide, and most models are only big enough for two passengers.

It comes in black, red, blue, white and orange, but can also be painted to look like a police car or an army vehicle.

General Motors stopped producing Hummers in early 2010 after the vehicle sparked controversy as a symbol of excess and high fuel consumption of under ten miles to the gallon.

Cheap: Not only is it a fraction of the size of the original, it is fully electric and Congestion Charge-exempt

My Electric Vehicle (MEV) then acquired the exclusive rights to sell the electric HX model to take on the growing green market.

The original Hummer design was based on the military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle, or HumVee.

The first civilian Hummer was built in 1992 following its much-publicised use during the Gulf War.

At its peak — with sales reaching 71,524 in 2006 — the SUV was built in several countries worldwide including Russia and South Africa.

One model of the Hummer, the H2, has a fuel economy of just 14 miles per gallon and was so heavy it was technically illegal for use on some streets.
