2013 Infiniti M35h Summary

The Infiniti M35h, also known as the M Hybrid, was introduced last year and quickly became one of the best hybrid luxury cars along with the Porsche Panamera S Hybrid. The car uses electric hybrid technology developed in-house by Nissan, and according to the company, it can double the fuel economy of the gasoline-powered Infiniti M. This, of course, is not possible in practical situations, but the Hybrid offers a great blend of performance and fuel economy in any case. Now in its second year of production, the 2013 Infiniti M35h has to face increased competition with more hybrid cars like the BMW ActiveHybrid 5 in the picture.

Whether the M Hybrid still manages to stay a good choice this year remains to be seen.

New For 2013

The 2013 Infiniti M35h is unchanged for its second year of production.

Exterior

The 2013 Infiniti M35h has the same exterior as that of its gasoline-powered Infiniti M siblings. The only thing that distinguishes this car from the M37 and M56 are its badges. The styling of the car combines the height of the last-generation M and the curves of the current-generation G37.

The front end is dominated by the large grille that sits low on the sedan’s face as a throwback to the Infiniti Essence concept car that commemorated the 20th anniversary of the brand and formed the basis for the current model. The rear end of the sedan rises slightly at the center. Standard exterior features for the 2013 Infiniti M35h include 18-inch alloy wheels, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights, power sunroof with express open, and power folding side mirrors.

The car is available with adaptive headlights as an option.

Interior Cargo

The cabin of the 2013 Infiniti M35h mirrors the top-notch cabins of the M37 and M56. Like the exterior styling, the interior of the M35h has powerful lines to give it a more muscular feel. The overall quality and space of the hybrid’s interior can challenge the interior of established European luxury cars in terms of refinement. The technology used inside is also the best offered by Infiniti.

The front and rear seats offer generous amounts of space for their occupants, and the driver enjoys great visibility thanks to the height of the greenhouse. The navigation and stereo systems of the Infiniti are some of the best and most intuitive ones offered in the industry.

The dash gets the usual list of entertainment and comfort features with an intuitive layout of controls. Like other hybrids, the M35h also gets a power-flow display and charge-assist gauge. However, the most notable feature of the cabin is the audible pedestrian warning system.

The M Hybrid is the first hybrid vehicle to get this system, which was inspired by a similar system used on the all-electric Nissan Leaf. The pedestrian warning system works so that the car emits distinctive sounds from standstill to 20 miles per hour, when the car is powered by the near-silent electric motor. Other interior features of the 2013 Infiniti M35h include leather upholstery, USB, iPod, and Bluetooth connectivity, push-button start, and backup camera.

Optional features include a Bose stereo system and the navigation system.

Safety

The 2013 Infiniti M35h gets the same list of safety features as its gasoline-powered siblings, including six airbags, electronic stability system, anti-lock brakes, and active front head restraints. The six airbags include side airbags for the front seats, and side curtain airbags. Optional safety features include adaptive cruise control, blind spot intervention and warning system, and lane departure warning and prevention system.

The prevention system automatically applies light brakes to stop the car from drifting to another lane.

Driving Experience

The gasoline power source of the 2013 Infiniti M35h is a 3.5-liter, V-6 engine that delivers 302 horsepower. Electric power is delivered by a 50 kilowatt motor that delivers 67 horsepower and a 376 V lithium-ion battery back. Together, the hybrid powertrain of the M35h has a combined rating of 360 horsepower. The sedan gets a seven-speed, automatic transmission and rear wheel drive as standard. Fuel economy is obviously the most important factor to consider when it comes to a hybrid, and the M35h’s Direct Response Hybrid system delivers a fuel economy of around 27/32 mpg city/highway.

This is close to the fuel economy figures of Honda and Hyundai hybrids, and on its own it is quite an impressive figure. According to the company, the electric motor alone can power the M35h up to 62 mph and for up to 12 miles. In practical road conditions, the car’s electric mode is used for about 50 percent of the time, which is impressive.

Apart from fuel economy, the hybrid powertrain of the 2013 Infiniti shows some more changes over the gasoline powertrain of the rest of the M sedans. Despite the M35h sharing the same steering ratio as other M sedans, it has a less responsive steering, especially on center. The suspension of the M35h is also softer, and Infiniti has added anti-roll bars to the car to bring back the lost stability and handling characteristics. As a result, the hybrid offers a slightly smoother and comfortable ride than the rest of its family without compromising too much on handling. The added weight of the electric motor, battery back, and other hybrid-exclusive mechanisms shifts the balance towards the rear, which results in more neutral cornering.

In other words, the handling is slightly dulled when compared to the other M sedans.
