2014 Infiniti Q50 Review and Test Drive

According to the folks at Infiniti, luxury has never felt so liberating as it does in the all-new 2014 Q50, the ultimate replacement for the popular G37. We now know the G37 will continue to be produced through the end of the year with a huge price reduction. For car lovers, the lower price won’t be enough to overcome the incredible changes to the Q50.

G37 is a good car, don’t get me wrong, but the Q50 is an incredible car.

From the moment you glance at the 2014 Infiniti Q50, you notice fluid, yet muscular styling on the exterior. A bold front end gives way to classic lines that run through the sides all the way to the huge trunk. My Moonlight White tester was furnished by Sewell Infiniti Dallas, and I asked them to give me the most popular seller, which is the Premium version. There is a base model below this one, and a Sport model that is more expensive, so this is the middle-of-the-road version and it is impressive.

There is a hybrid available also.

Under the hood, we have a 3.7-liter V6 that is putting out 328-horses, and 269 pound-feet of torque. Best of all, it comes with a 7-speed automatic that upshifts and downshifts effortlessly and quickly. Listeners of my show know I am not always a fan of the CVT, so this 7-speed with a manual shift mode was thrilling for me.

The Drive Mode selector allows you to choose from Standard, Eco, and Sport. Unlike many of the cars with this feature, you can tell a distinct difference among the three. The Eco mode lets you maximize fuel economy and according to the Infiniti folks, will result in a gain of about 10%.

The Q50 drives and handles great. The steering is speed sensitive and is very responsive. It corners well and in standard drive mode, the Q50 rides smoother than its predecessor the G37.

In tight turns, under heavy acceleration, there is no body lean or roll whatsoever, especially in Sport mode. If you did not know, you would swear there was a V8 engine under the hood. Although it appears to be roughly the same size as the G37, the Q50 is wider and sits a little lower.

Perhaps the greatest improvement in the Q50 is inside. Make no mistake, this is a luxury car with a luxury interior. The use of matte-finish aluminum and contrast stitching is remarkable. Front seats are comfortable and would accommodate adults up to 6’5” or so.

The back seat room is ample. Overall, the Q50 interior is elegant and you can tell a lot of attention to detail was paid.

I love the full-flowing center stack that gives the driver a cockpit feel. The new Infiniti InTouch system takes connectivity to a new level. In the center stack, an 8-inch upper screen displays navigation and vehicle info, while climate, audio and app displays are just below on the 7-inch lower unit.

Two expansive screens that … up to each other mean the audio and climate systems can be monitored independently.

The screens function like an iPad, pinch to zoom, swipe to scroll. InTouch is customizable and can store up to four driver preference profiles: navigation, audio, climate and app settings. Infiniti says it ll be compatible with around a dozen apps, including Twitter, Facebook and Pandora.

The apps can be controlled via voice prompts to minimize distractions.

The Q50 Premium comes super loaded with standard features like a power moon roof, heated seats, push button start, Bluetooth, steering wheel controls, and a Bose stereo with 14-speakers. The only option on this car is the navigation system that includes real-time traffic for $1400.

In summary, this is a fun to drive, exciting, luxury car that Nissan priced right. It is an outstanding value and will be very high on my recommendation list.

What I liked most: The handling, interior, and price.

What I would change: Q50 comes with 17” wheels, wish they were 18” minimally.

MSRP: $42,005 as equipped.

Fuel Economy: 20 City/29 Highway. City mileage is better in Eco mode.

2014 Infiniti Q50 in a few words: Outstanding car, outstanding value.

Warranty: 4 year/60,000 mile bumper-to-bumper, 6 year/70,000 powertrain, roadside assistance, complimentary loan car, and Infiniti personal assistant.

Dealers: If you want an Infiniti of any kind, we have dealer affiliates in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.
