The 5 Geneva Concept Cars You Have to See: Sexy, Powerful, and. Brown?

Next to the scorching-hot customer-ready metal that debuted in Geneva, the show’s concept cars needed to work harder than usual to grab eyeballs. Luckily, they were more than up to the task, although in somewhat of a surprise for a European auto show, three of our favorite concepts were Japanese. (Blame Rinspeed and Giugiaro for showing what are—for them—very tame vehicles.) Read on, and look forward to the day when all of these impressive show pieces are prowling public roads.

Honda’s Civic Type R is unlikely to be shipped to postal codes outside of Japan and Europe once this concept makes the leap to production. But that doesn’t make it any less exciting: Honda says it wants the real Type R to be the fastest front-drive car ever to lap the Nürburgring. Helping it reach that goal is a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four with VTEC (yo) pumping out in excess of 276 horsepower, plus one of the most ridiculous wings this side of a Can Am car.

Okay, we know, Infiniti’s F1-inspired Q50 Eau Rouge concept first debuted at the Detroit auto show nearly three months ago. So why does it make our list of steamiest Geneva fantasy fare? Because now the blood-red hottie has an engine, and that engine is freakin’ radtacular.

Seemingly sourced from the beastly GT-R, the Eau Rouge’s mill is a twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V-6 making 560 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque. The horsepower figure falls between those of the GT-R and the GT-R NISMO, although the torque is a little on the light side. No matter—Infiniti confirms eye-watering performance, although it naturally still refuses to confirm anything in the way of production. (Hint: It’s happening .) Maserati shocked just about everyone when it rolled the stunning Alfieri sports car concept onto its stand in Geneva, despite the internet rumor mill having sparked talk of a mystery Maser just one day prior to the show. That’s because, well, just look at the thing . Smaller than the automaker’s GranTurismo, the Alfieri is also a 2+2 like its big brother, and is blessed with sinewy, flowing, Italianate style … enough to bolster Maserati’s burgeoning sales goals—not to mention the fantasies of enthusiasts worldwide. Quick—what mixes Mazda’s highly attractive Kodo design language (see: Mazda 3. 6. CX-5 ) with a honey badger? This Hazumi concept, of course, which looks like a pouncing weasel in a Thriller -era Michael Jackson jacket. It also looks like it will be turned into the next-generation Mazda 2 subcompact hatch. and this is a very, very good thing.

And we hope the 1.5-liter Skyactiv-D diesel four fitted to the show property makes it to our shores, because small diesel hatchbacks are just boss. HAZUMI INFO, PHOTOS ››

Because it makes sense, and also because this list is arranged alphabetically, we’ve saved the best concept for last: Volvo’s Concept Estate shooting brake. We’re smitten by the car’s aggressive proportions, muscular bodywork, wonderful interior materials and patterns, and, of course, its lustrous brown paint. We also like its tablet-like infotainment screen. which plays host to Apple’s new CarPlay iOS integration.

Volvo admits looking to the past as a starting point for this design (the iconic P1800 ES), but says that it took only that car’s most distilled essence. Now, about that production version. CONCEPT ESTATE INFO, PHOTOS ››
