Infiniti has signalled its intention to join the hybrid supercar race with the Emerg-e concept that was officially revealed at the 2012 Geneva motor show.

Following weeks of online leaks, the Emerg-e was revealed in the metal — or carbon fibre — during the opening day of the show.

The low-slung two-seater boasts a pair of mid-mounted 150kW electric motors that combine to drive the rear wheels and produce 300kW, enough to propel the carbon fibre-bodied car to 100km/h in a little more than four seconds.

The battery pack can be recharged from the mains or from an onboard Lotus-designed 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine (also mounted behind the seats) that never drives the wheels but acts as a generator, producing just 35kW.

The plug-in hybrid-propelled Infiniti Emerg-e has an electric-only range of 50km but the petrol engine extends that to a total of almost 500km.

Infiniti senior vice president and chief creative officer Shiro Nakamura says the Emerg-e’s lights were inspired by a god’s forceful eye, while a flowing Japanese kimono helped shape the side air intakes that help cool the batteries and feed the three-cylinder engine.

The Emerg-e’s panels are made of carbon fibre, something used to keep weight down, which is even more of a challenge in an electric car where batteries and electric motors can add hundreds of kilograms to an otherwise lightweight machine.

It is elegant yet dynamic, and has graceful power, said Nakamura. ‘Mid-ship cars are usually less refined, but the body of Infiniti Emerge-e is like silk wrapping over the wheels.

While the Emerg-e shown at Geneva is unlikely to make it into showrooms, it will provide inspiration for a supercar designed to rival everything from Porsches and Ferraris to the upcoming Honda NSX and Lexus LF-LC, the latter two yet to be produced but both running predominantly on electricity.

Infiniti executive vice president Andy Palmer says the Emerg-e is a crucial halo for the evolution of the Nissan-owned Japanese luxury brand, which is embarking on a global expansion that this year includes Australia.

We need something that symbolises the brand, says Palmer. We need the cherry on the cake.

The production probability of that car is quite low. The probability of producing something off that is quite high. Not necessarily with that powertrain.
