1996 Saturn SL1 odometer: 165000 manual transmission

For sale, I have a grey 1996 Saturn SL1, with 5 speed stick shift, 4 door, and equipped with AC and a sunroof. It has 165K miles on it. It runs, drives straight, stops on a dime, and is INSPECTED UNTIL NOVEMBER 2014! Gets 27-30 miles per gallon. Good cheap car for a college kid, or someone on low budget needing a 4-door.

It needs the cylinder head rebuilt (or get a refurbished head) due to a slight misfire caused by exhaust valve problems on cylinder #2 (as evidenced by a compression leak-down test). It also needs a transmission, due to worn synchronizers in first gear. A rebuilt cylinder head can be bought online for $250 from headsonly. com and a replacement transmission can be obtained for less than $100 from one of several local U-pull-it junk yards.

Also, the A/C pump needs a new electric clutch, but last time I used the A/C it worked fine during the summer. Right now, I have the A/C bypassed with a shorter serpentine belt.

Even with the misfire, the car still gets about 27-30 mpg, and I’ve been driving it that way for quite a while unaware of the cause until recently. I fixed the problem with the shifter that caused the synchronizers for first gear to go bad.

OK, the good: With all of the diagnostics I’ve done, I have the car running pretty smooth, and have ruled out a lot of other potential problems. If you want the details, ask me, but only if you are interested in the car. Don’t waste my time otherwise. The car has almost new tires (about $300 value), with only about 13K miles on them, and I have record of keeping them rotated consistently since new.

There is also an entirely new exhaust system from front to back (another $300 value), that was put on prior to the last inspection. The motor has a few brand new sensors, including knock sensor, idle air control, and throttle position sensor. Oil has been changed every 3K miles since I bought the car over 30K miles ago. I replaced the water pump and radiator, and flushed the old coolant out of the block last year. Brand new intake manifold gasket.

Plugs wires have about 15-20K miles on them. New wiper blades. KN air filter. No ignition system problems or fuel delivery problems or vacuum leaks or bad grounds. Everything checks out fine externally on the motor; it’s just that exhaust valve problem on cylinder #2.

The body is straight, and as far as I know, it has never been in a wreck and has a good title, so I hate to just send it to the junk yard, especially with all I have invested. The car still has plenty of potential.

I’ll either fix this thing up and sell it for a higher price, or sell it cheaper now to someone else who wants to take it as is.
