1. What is Fisker Automotive?

Fisker Automotive is an American manufacturer of premium Electric Vehicles with extended range. Their mission is to redefine the luxury automobile with an unwavering dedication to sustainability.

2. Who designed the Fisker Karma?

Henrik Fisker, who was previously the Design Director for Aston Martin and President and CEO of BMW’s Designworks USA. He was also responsible for such cars as the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9 and V8 Vantage.

3. How does the Karma work?

As an Electric Vehicle with extended range the Fisker Karma’s series hybrid powertrain consists of an efficient gasoline engine, a Lithium-ion battery pack, and two electric motors at the rear wheels. Selectable power modes offer the most flexibility to suit driving conditions. Stealth mode provides efficient, all-electric operation with up to 50 miles of tailpipe- emission free operation.

Beyond 50 miles the gasoline engine automatically starts providing power for an additional 250 miles of hybrid operation. In Sport mode the engine and battery combine for added power, giving the driver more aggressive acceleration and higher top speed.

4. Where is the battery located?

Within the battery tunnel that runs down the center line of the vehicle. This tunnel is a major part of the car’s structural rigidity and the placement contributes to a near perfect 50/50 weight distribution.

5. What type of battery does Fisker Karma use?

The Fisker Karma utilizes a 20 kWh Lithium-ion battery that is based on Nanophosphate technology and supplied by A123 Systems in Massachusetts.

6. What is the charge time of Karma’s battery?

For a battery requiring a full recharge, the charge time will range from approximately 6 hours to 14 hours based on the type of charging unit you are using. Fisker plans to offer a Wall-Mounted Charging Station (220V, 3.3kW) and a portable Travel Charger (standard 110V) at the launch of Karma.

7. What about Parts?

Like many luxury oriented carmakers, including Porsche and Ferrari, Fisker has partnered with larger automakers to secure key subassemblies such as heating systems, door handles, airbags, as well as battery and engine technology. In the case of Fisker, key powertrain components are sourced from one of the world’s largest automakers. So parts access need not be a concern.

8. What is the fuel economy (MPG, L/100km) rating?

Karma will get about 67mpg (3.5L/100km) in combination city/highway driving, based on the Society of Automotive Engineers’ (SAE) J2841 formula for evaluating efficiency of plug-in hybrids. However, based on your driving needs Karma is capable of getting upwards of 100mpg.

9. What is the Karma’s emissions tailpipe CO2 output?

83g CO2/km — lower than all currently available hybrids, based on the same formula.

10. What is the purpose of the solar panel on the roof?

In the Fisker Karma’s roof is an integrated, full-length solar panel. It is the world’s largest spherically (curved in multiple directions, like a sphere) curved automotive solar panel. It powers a fan that lowers the temperature of the interior while the car is parked, thereby reducing the load on the battery-driven A/C system.

11. Can you describe the Karma’s advanced aluminum space frame and how it is assembled?

The Karma’s advanced extruded aluminum space frame is a proprietary design developed by Fisker Automotive engineers. It strikes a perfect balance between size and weight. It provides industry leading rigidity specifications that delivers a world class driving experience. The Fisker Karma’s space frame is assembled using 79 meters of precision MIG welds and 1,058 self-piercing rivets.

Each technique is used independently only where necessary to ensure top quality and durability.

12. How will maintenance costs for the Karma compare to traditional vehicles and other hybrids?

We anticipate powertrain maintenance costs to be lower since electric motors are simple and reliable and there will be very little load on the gasoline engine. There is also no transmission.
