Around Australia by electric car

Glen George has been on the road for three and a half months, travelling a total distance of 20,031 kilometres around Australia in his electric powered 1956 MG race car.

Guinness World Records have been in touch periodically throughout the record breaking attempt and Mr George is confident that his journey will be verified.

What happens now is from today I will put all of my data together and get my log book signed. I send them a copy of my log book and all the media copies and then they will evaluate it and make a decision from there, explains Mr George.

As well as attempting to break a world record, Mr George has also raised public awareness of electrical vehicles and has proven that they can travel long distances if the journey is well planned.

The car performed wonderfully, he says. It has done over 35,000 kilometres now and no maintenance has been needed whatsoever.

Mr George’s electric powered 1956 MG race car travelled at a moving average of 59 kilometres per hour. The longest distance travelled in a day was 263 kilometres per hour.

Mr George explains that his attempt at breaking the world record for the longest journey was not the original plan.

I retired in 2009 and just wanted to see this country. I was building the car at the same time and I belong to the electric vehicle association, so it just developed from there, he says.

Commenting on his recent circumnavigation around the country, Mr George says that he has had a really fantastic journey.

I contacted all the shires before I left. I’ve been able to meet a lot of dignitaries- a lot of majors, a lot of lord majors, he says.

The Lord Mayor of Adelaide (Stephen Yarwood) has an electric car himself, so he rode mine and I rode his.

The night before completing his trip around Australia, Mr George drove into a thunderstorm outside of Mackay.

There is no roof on the car so I was getting very wet and you couldn’t see very far and there was thunder and lightning so it was quite an experience, he says.

Another experience Mr George went through on his journey was crossing the Nullarbor Plain between South Australia and Western Australia.

I’ve crossed the Nullarbor twice now in six weeks. I wouldn’t want to do it again in a while, he says. I do about 200 to 220 kilometres a day, that’s my limit. The Nullarbor was quite a long stretch.

Glen George is looking forward to sitting in a normal chair, eating off a normal table, having meals and sleeping in a proper bed after being on the road for the last three and a half months.
