Coda prices electric sedan at a whopping $44,900

Sunday, September 26, 2010, 17:22 by Auto Correspondent

Coda Automobile Inc. the American start-up based in Santa Monica, California, has priced its new Electric Vehicle sedan at $44,900 (approx. Rs 20 lakhs), barring the cost of the charging equipment.

Buyers in the U.S. will get a federal tax rebate of up to $7500 depending on their income. In California, a further $5,000 discount could be availed, thanks to the state’s tax incentives for buying electric vehicles.

Astonishingly, the Coda sedan, which will be launched in December, is priced significantly above the two electric vehicles from Nissan and Chevrolet. The Nissan Leaf is priced at $32,780 (almost $12,000 less) while the Chevrolet Volt costs $40,280 (about $4,000 cheaper than the Coda).

Powered by lithium-ion battery which produces 134 horses and 300 Nm of torque, the Coda EV’s top speed is listed at 80 mph. It takes around six hours to charge the Coda from a standard 220 V power socket, offering the car a range of 90 to 120 miles per charge. Coda’s Intelligent Thermal Management System adds to the robustness of the all-season electric car, especially in winters.

Safety features include ABS, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), six advanced airbags and pre-tensioner equipped seat belts. The Coda EV sports 17-inch forged-aluminum alloy wheels, electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and independent MacPherson struts at both front and rear.

The Coda EV is squarely gunning for the Nissan Leaf. It has two important advantages over its rival. First, Coda’s range of 120 miles is greater than the Leaf’s 100 miles.

Secondly, while Coda takes six hours to charge, the Leaf takes an additional two hours to do the job. However, Coda’s biggest advantage is the fast-charging system that gives it a range of 40 miles on a two-hour charge. Besides, Coda has a 6.6 kW onboard battery charger while the Leaf has only a 3.3 kW charger.

The Coda EV will initially be available only in California. Depending on how well it performs, Coda will begin offering the electric car to customers in other American states. Bookings for the electric sedan have begun and buyers will have to visit the company website (www.codaautomotive.com) for making reservations with a fully refundable $499 deposit.

Deliveries will take around 45-60 days. The car is expected to roll out from factory gates before the end of this year. Here too, Coda may have the advantage of launching its car earlier than the Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt, which are scheduled for a 2011 launch.

Coda plans to sell an ambitious 14,000 units of the EV. That will be a tough asking for a company that neither has the brand recognition of a Nissan, Chevrolet or Honda nor the style and super-car performance of the Tesla Roadster and Fisker Karma. And besides, at $44,900, the EV crosses all bounds of logic and reasoning.

Oh, and did we say it’s made in China?
