Detroit Electric Reveals SP:01 EV Ahead Of Shanghai

on April 5, 2013

Reborn EV brand Detroit Electric has revealed its SP:01 pure-electric sports car, ahead of an official debut at the Shanghai Auto Show this month.

Teased in a single image last month, the SP:01 follows a similar formula to the now-defunct Tesla Roadster by combining a bespoke electric drivetrain with underpinnings shared with the Lotus Elise.

All exterior panels aside from doors and the removable hardtop are unique, and constructed from carbon fibre (like the Tesla) light weight and strength.

Head and taillight units are shared with the Lotus however, but the latter has been rearranged into a diagonal placement.

Detroit Electric has also revealed detailed specs for the SP:01, including claimed 0-100km/h acceleration of 3.7 seconds and a top speed of 248km/h making it the fastest production EV to date.

The SP:01 uses a mid-mounted 150kW/225Nm electric motor to send power to the rear wheels, and boasts a European cycle driving range in excess of 288km.

An impressive 1090kg kerb weight is key to the SP:01’s performance and efficiency, undercutting the Tesla Roadster by nearly 200kg.

A unique feature of the SP:01 is its four-speed clutched manual default transmission choice, unlike the direct-drive or CVT employed by other EV’s.

A five-speed manual will be optional, along with a two-speed automatic.

Twin 37kWh lithium-polymer batteries provide the SP:01’s energy, and can be charged in 4.3 hours from a 32Amp charge point, or eight hours from a 13Amp household point.

This battery system also has bi-directional charge and discharge functionality, meaning it can be used as a mobile energy source with the capability of powering an entire household a great alternative candles during a blackout.

On the inside, the SP:01 uses a Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment (SAMI) as an interface for many of its functions and energy monitoring, and sits among lavish leather and carbon fibre-trimmed interior surfaces.

Operating out of Detroit’s iconic Fisher Building, Detroit Electric plans to produce 2500 vehicles annually at a separate Detroit facility.

The company plans to introduce a further two EV models by the end of 2014, and will cap SP:01 production at just 999 units.

Production of the SP:01 is set to commence in August after its Shanghai debut, with an entry price of US$135,000 (AU$129,000). themotorreport.com.au
