A company revived by former Lotus CEO, comes out with the fastest fully electric production car in the world. Carhoots gives you the full details and images of this impressive machine.

Looks familiar doesn t it? A Lotus Elise based electric sports car. Where have we seen that before? If you answered with America, give yourself a pat on the back.

But more specifically it s a place containing more Toyota Prius per capita than anywhere else in the world California of course, where the Tesla Roadster comes from. a car which is also electric, also a roadster and also quite fast.

But not quite as fast as its new Detroit built rival. The SP:01 with its 201bhp 166lb ft air-cooled electric motor is capable of cracking 155mph making it the fastest fully electric production car In The World.

The motor is fuelled by two lithium polymer batteries which take just 4.3 hours to fully recharge impressive. Petrol heads rejoice because, ready? Power is sent to the rear wheels good via a 4-speed manual (MANUAL in an electric car!) gearbox. It should handle nicely, too. Thanks to bespoke carbon fiber bodywork and an aluminium-bonded chassis from the Elise it s surprisingly light, tipping the scales at just 1090kg.

It also retains the Elise s suspension hardware with retuned springs and dampers, so the agile handling characteristics of the standard Elise should remain in tact. Acceleration is quite frankly startling. 0-60mph takes just 3.7 seconds thanks to its lithe curb weight and the constant wave torque that electric motor dishes out.

Stopping power comes from big vented 282mm discs at each corner with a regenerative braking system.

Inside you get lots of tasty carbon fibre and leather, full smart phone integration, and even climate control air conditioning, but still no girly power steering to get in the way of Lotus pure driving experience ethos. Outside, there are subtle styling tweaks that differentiate it from its Tesla competitor and their Lotus counterparts, and with this car, you even get a glass engine cover just like a Ferrari 458, which allows you to admire some black metal, voltage stickers and fine Detroit craftsmanship.

So what s the deal with this new Detroit Electric brand? Well those who are slightly ancient probably wont remember that Detroit Electric built electric cars from 1907 up until 1939. Fast forward to post-prehistoric times and in 2008 former Lotus CEO Albert Lam revived the brand, after five years of research and development; we have this very fast blue thing the slightly awkwardly named SP:01.

Just 999 SP:01 s will be built in the good ol U.S of A by blokes whose names are mainly Bob and they ll be sold for $135,000 USD which equates to around £105,000.

What do we think carhooters, could this be the best fully electric car for the motoring enthusiast? Let us know your thoughts by tweeting us @carhootsUK. or leaving a comment below!
