FAW caused a stir at the Johannesburg International Motor Show with the launch of the lowest cost 1.3-litre car in South Africa when it introduced the FAW V2 hatchback at R99 995. SA is the first right hand drive export market for this model and its introduction follows a six-month local test and evaluation programme to ensure its suitability for local conditions.

Making the V2 an even bigger bargain in these times of rising vehicle prices is that it is full-house in terms of comfort and convenience equipment levels. Two examples of the new V2 are on display at Expo centre – one finished in silver and the other in an eye-catching red.

“We are very pleased that the FAW team in China has assisted us in bringing our first volume model passenger car to market at this unbeatable price,” commented the general manager of FAW cars and light commercials, Pedro Pereira.

“The first FAW passenger car and light commercial to be introduced on the South African market – the Sirius S80 seven-seater people-carrier and panel van – only went on sale at the beginning of the year and already we are seeing growing interest in the brand and a steady sales pattern for the Sirius models.

“Now that FAW entering the volume sector of the car market for the first time with a quality car which is fully specified in terms of features we expect a significant upturn in business.”

Besides launching the high value V2 at the Johannesburg Motor Show the FAW brand is also previewing two more models scheduled for introduction during 2014: the rather funky seven-seater V80 minibus and the attractively-styled X80 medium-size SUV

“When we launched the Sirius, first with a 1.3-litre engine and later with the option of a 1.5-litre power plant we said that we would grow the FAW passenger car and light commercial vehicle range  as more right hand drive models became available. We are now starting to roll out that programme with the launch of the V2 and previewing the next two models bound for our shores,” explained Pedro Pereira.

The very well-equipped V80 seven-seater minibus, which is built on the rear-wheel drive Sirius chassis, is fitted with a 1.5-litre petrol engine and a five-speed manual gearbox. Suspension is Macpherson struts in front and leaf springs for the solid rear axle. Alloy wheels are standard.

Comfort and convenience features include dual air conditioning, electric windows and exterior rear view mirrors, power steering, audio system and remote door locking. The second row has two separate seats, one of which slides to provide access through a sliding rear door to the bench rear seat which accommodates three adults. There are two side-hinged rear doors.

The V80 minibus will be launched in SA in the first quarter of 2014.

The FAW exhibit that is expected to be a real show-stopper is the stylish, five-seater X80 SUV, which was launched in China recently to high acclaim. The model on show is the flagship in the range with a 2.3-litre petrol engine developing 118kW at 6 500r/min. And 207N.m of torque at 4 000r/min.

It is mated to a smooth-shifting six-speed automatic in this front wheel drive derivative.

There is nothing lacking in terms of comfort, convenience and safety features. The FAW X80 is extremely well equipped with a wide array of luxury features.

These include auto-levelling and adaptive Xenon headlights and washers, LED daytime running lights, automatic-on head lights, rain-sensing wiper, power sunroof, cruise control, keyless entry, power-adjustable front seats, leather trim, audio system with Bluetooth and iPod connectivity and dual zone climate control.

The X80 is also well equipped  in terms of safety  features with six airbags, traction control, stability control, anti skid ABS brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD) and brake assist (BA),  tyre pressure monitoring system and park assist with a camera.

The fifth car on the FAW display is the recently introduced standard version of the Sirius 7-seater with a 1.5-litre engine. This is priced at a very keen R173 295 and is proving the most popular model in the Sirius range.

“We are very proud of the way our vehicle range is growing and particularly pleased with the high quality products we are receiving from FAW, which is one of the biggest vehicle manufacturers in the world, making cars in China not only for itself, but also for famous international name brands such as Toyota, Volkswagen, General Motors and Mazda.

“We are confident that the FAW passenger and light commercial vehicle brand will grow on the basis of customer loyalty and word-of-mouth as we continue to introduce reliable, value-for-money vehicles that are backed by a growing and enthusiastic dealer network that now numbers 22 outlets,” concluded Pedro Pereira.
