A smart diesel reformer and a fuel cell are the core of a new type of electric power unit. Environmentally friendly and the unit could be a serious in the market for generators in electric and other applications.

The power unit can run on biodiesel as well as diesel.

This combination of two technologies is now undergoing testing, to funding under the Research RENERGI programme. In trials, a solid-acid fuel cell ran on pure hydrogen and on hydrogen from diesel by the unit’s — with only an difference in performance.

The reformer converts hydrocarbons hydrogen, CO 2 and heat. Due to the unit’s efficiency, CO 2 emissions are substantially than in conventional combustion and no other demonstrable exhaust is — meaning that particulates, black carbon nitrous oxide (NOx) and monoxide (CO) are elimi¬nated. An plus is that the reformer no smoke or odour.

The silent generator is being developed and by the Norwegian company Nordic Systems (NPS). The California SAFCell Inc. is developing and deliver the new type of fuel Also on the team is the California of Technology (Caltech). Dag Шvrebш, Director of NPS, has many experience with fuel and has been working closely Caltech on this new technologyGerman technology

It all began in Germany. In 2006 the NPS came across an interesting technology developed at RWTH University in the late 1990s. NPS the licensing rights, envisioning a market potential for an electric supply unit based on a cell that is not dependent on filling stations, and that can run on easily available fuel surrendering the environmental benefits of cells.

In 2009 NPS secured usage to the new US solid-acid technology for use with fuel types such as and biofuels.

Tor-Geir Engebretsen, Director and co-founder of NPS, is pleased with this tests. Now we have demonstrated the solid-acid technology works. The step is to test a larger of 1 200 W.

Armed Forces first

Engebretsen points out that the technology is scalable, it is well for future generators in electric But NPS is taking the development in stages. The first market is power for the defence industry; NPS has a technology agreement with the Royal Armed Forces.

In addition, NPS has a product development with Marshall Land of the UK, with the aim of supplying silent-running for the British Armed Forces.

If all according to plan, the unit developed with Marshall be ready for market launch by while the solid-acid fuel will be phased in somewhat An assembly plant in Hшyanger, is scheduled to open in early with Industrial Development of Norway (SIVA) as contractor.

Power Systems (NPS)

NPS has seven employees in Norway, and six in the USA a contract with SAFCell in
