SHANGHAI – General Motors is joining its Shanghai GM, SAIC-GM-Wuling and Shanghai OnStar joint ventures at Auto Guangzhou 2012, which begins today. The GM family is displaying 38 vehicles from the Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac and Baojun brands.

“Auto Guangzhou 2012 is this year’s leading automotive industry event in South China,” said Bob Socia, President, GM China, and Chief Country Operations Officer, China, India and ASEAN. “It gives GM and our joint ventures the opportunity to showcase our leadership in green technology, fuel economy, design and performance to car buyers across the region.”

Sail SPRINGO EV: Zero Fuel Consumption and Zero Tailpipe Emissions

The Sail SPRINGO EV, the first production electric vehicle developed by a joint venture in China, is making its global debut at Auto Guangzhou 2012. Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) created the Sail SPRINGO EV based on global industry standards.

The Sail SPRINGO EV has a range of 130-200 km and a top speed of 130 km/h. It delivers an exceptional driving experience that rivals traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, while offering zero fuel consumption and zero tailpipe emissions. The Sail SPRINGO EV will initially be sold by Shanghai GM in the Shanghai market at a starting price of RMB 258,000.

“Green Drive, Green Technology”: New Strategy for China

Shanghai GM is also introducing its “Green Drive, Green Technology” strategy at Auto Guangzhou 2012. The next steps in the company’s “green” strategy include a plan to roll out a series of new energy vehicles through 2020. It will leverage new energy and fuel efficiency technologies based on market and consumer requirements to make this a core competency.

The Sail SPRINGO EV is the first vehicle to result from this strategy.

Within the next five years alone, Shanghai GM will begin offering additional extended-range electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and next-generation pure electric vehicles. Between now and 2020, the commercialization of new energy vehicles will be accelerated by Shanghai GM, covering all three of its brands – Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac. An exclusive Drive to Green sales network and customer experience showrooms will be established starting in the first half of 2013 in Shanghai.

In line with its new strategy, Shanghai GM will also focus on improving its products powered by internal combustion engines. It will begin introducing automatic engine Start/Stop to its products in 2014. The following year, Shanghai GM will begin producing vehicles featuring next-generation strong hybrid technology, which can improve fuel economy by 50 percent.

In 2016, its upper-medium segment passenger cars will begin adopting mild hybrid technologies. In addition, Shanghai GM will extensively utilize spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) technology and introduce small-displacement engines with direct injection and turbocharging, which improve engine performance and efficiency.

Buick: Leading the Way with the Encore Compact SUV

The theme of Buick’s display at Auto Guangzhou 2012 is New Technology, New Experience. It is showing nine models ranging from sedans to coupes to SUVs.

The Shanghai-built Encore compact SUV is making its domestic auto show debut. Launched in China on October 10, 2012, it is targeted at young consumers who prefer the convenience and functionality of an SUV. The Encore is based on GM’s latest four-wheel-drive compact SUV platform and offers a new choice in the segment.

Among the other models from Buick are a Regal GS sedan and Excelle XT hatchback that have been retrofitted by world-renowned automobile tuning company Irmscher to showcase the brand’s high-tech sporty side.

Chevrolet: Style and Speed Take Center Stage

Chevrolet has 12 models on display at the show. The all-new 2012 Epica intermediate sedan – which has been upgraded inside and outside – is making its first appearance at the Guangzhou auto show, following its launch in early November.

Another Chevrolet product that is making its Auto Guangzhou debut is the Cruze WTCC special edition. Based on the winner of the World Touring Car Championship (WTCC), it is expected to go on sale at the end of the year to enable driving enthusiasts to share in the performance and racing culture of the Chevrolet brand.

Among the other products from Chevrolet are the Sail Happiness Edition II small car, the highly acclaimed Code 130R and TRU 140S concepts, and a Malibu midsize sedan featuring the signatures of players from football giant Manchester United.

Cadillac: CTS-V Coupe and SRX Appear in the Limelight

The recently launched Cadillac CTS-V Coupe is a centerpiece of the Shanghai GM stand. It is the newest member of the high-performance V range of products. Appearing alongside the CTS-V Coupe is the SRX luxury SUV, Cadillac’s most popular model sold in China.

Baojun: Entire Stable on Display

Baojun is showing its growing lineup under the theme of World-Class New Sedan, Reliable Partner. The Baojun 630 midsize sedan is represented by the 630 1.8 AT, 630 1.8 MT, 630 1.5 AT and 630 1.5 MT. Sales of the 630, the initial Baojun model, have already reached 80,000 units since its introduction in August 2011.

The brand’s newest model – the Le Chi mini-car – is also on display, with the Le Chi 1.2 and Le Chi 1.0.

OnStar: Making Driving Safer and More Enjoyable

Shanghai OnStar, the leading telematics service provider in China, is unveiling a range of innovative navigation services to meet different needs and subscriber habits. Its new services include the Traffic on Demand real-time traffic navigation platform, Internet Navigation, Speed Alert, Find My Vehicle, Navigation Route Review and On-Demand Vehicle Diagnostics (OVD) Dealer World. Shanghai OnStar will begin rolling out the services in the near future.
