Volkswagen: Germany’s One-Million E-Car Goal is Achievable

Oct 24, 2013

Germany is currently ranked third in the production and sales of e-cars, and predictions from this month show Germany overtaking the US by 2018. The federal government of Germany plans to have at least one million e-cars on the roads by 2010, and six million by 2030 – a goal that many would conside r ambitious.

But Europe’s largest car manufacturer – Volkswagen AG – believes this goal is realistic if hybrids are counted among the supply of e-cars, Bloomberg News reports. Cars that are partially battery-powered have recently thrived on the German market: in 2012, the number of battery-powered car registrations was 4,157, which is double the number from the year before.

“We will make our contribution toward this goal” of one million, Volkswagen Chief Executive Officer Martin Winterkorn said Tuesday at a panel discussion in Ludwigshafen. Plug-in hybrids “offer the biggest market potential.”

As a result, Volkswagen plans to have at least 40 models of electric and hybrid cars available for consumers in upcoming years.

Electric cars are environmentally friendly, since they produce no exhaust pipe emissions and their carbon footprint depends primarily on what energy they use to charge their batteries. Their batteries are expensive and limited numbers of charging stations might stop consumers from purchasing them in the early years of the e-car revolution, but with plug-in hybrids offering both fuel and electromobility, consumers are starting to switch over.
