Coca-Cola will have multiplied its hybrid-electric delivery truck fleet fivefold between 2008 and 2010, as the beverage giant looks to cut fuel use of its vehicle fleet.

The company, which took delivery of 120 hybrid trucks with Eaton powertrains in 2008, will have 600 hybrid trucks on North American roads by the end of the year, the Hampton Roads, Virginia-based Daily Press reported, citing company officials.

Coca-Cola also plans to convert most of its sales-fleet cars and SUVs to hybrids, the newspaper said. Company officials didn t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Coca-Cola joins a list of U.S.-based companies looking to cut their carbon footprint as well as fuel costs by replacing diesel trucks with hybrids. UPS, which already owns more than 2,000 hybrid delivery trucks, said in October that it would buy another 130. Competitor FedEx deployed its first hybrid trucks, in the Los Angeles area, earlier this year.

Coca-Cola is also among U.S. companies that have taken delivery of a Smith Newton all-electric truck, which has a single-charge range of as many as 100 miles and can handle a payload of as much as 16,000 pounds. ATT, Frito-Lay and Staples have also purchased Smith Newton EVs.

General Motors this week unveiled its Chevrolet Sail electric vehicle concept ( pictured ) at the 2010 Guangzhou Auto Show.

The Sail, co-developed by Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, has a lithium-ion battery-powered motor delivering about 90 horsepower, a top speed of about 80 miles per hour and a single-charge range of almost 100 miles.

The car is being featured alongside the Chevrolet Volt plug-in electric hybrid sedan as part of the Drive to Green and Leading Innovation theme GM is pitching at the show.

BMW will include China among the countries where the German automaker will roll out its Megacity electric vehicle in 2013, the company confirmed.

The car will be marketed under a separate sub-brand similar to BMW s M badge, though the brand hasn t been disclosed. BMW isn t releasing any estimates on how many Megacity cars it plans to make during its first year of production.

The Megacity follows up the Mini-E and BMW s ActivE 1-series as the company s third stage of EV development for its smaller cars. The Mini-E, which was first leased out to about 450 U.S. drivers in mid-2009, has a single-charge range of about 100 miles. The ActivE 1-series will have a new, advanced lithium-ion battery pack developed jointly by BMW and SB LiMotive that s said to deliver 170 horsepower and a 0-60 mph acceleration time of less than nine seconds.

Nissan will work with Sumitomo and NEC at developing a membership-based electric-vehicle charging service across Japan, Nissan said in a statement today.

Nissan, which started delivering its all-electric Leaf to customers in both Japan and the U.S. this month, signed a memorandum of understanding with Sumitomo and NEC that will involve studies related to how effective quick-charging stations will be at locations such as monthly parking lots and apartment buildings.

The companies will also work on a plan to develop plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle charging facilities.

The program s first trial service will be in Japan s Kanagawa prefecture next year.
