My Cars, My Life

My boys love cars. They always have, and I would guess they got that from their dad and I. It was no accident that we got into financial problems because we didn’t understand money, and buying many cars and trading them in after just a short time certainly did a number on our credit. And it wasn’t a positive numeral at all.

I look back on those times, my love of older cars my entire life, and the vehicles that represented different phases of my life. Americans love our cars. Let me share some of mine.

In high school I had a bright red restored convertible Rambler. It even had an electric top. It was a late 60’s model. My life was breezy, fun, and I had no idea just how difficult life really was. My parent’s protection actually was intended to help me, but it didn’t.

I just had no idea at that time.

The next very cool car we had was a 69 Eldorado. It needed some work, but it was sound (almost) mechanically. I loved that huge boat of a car. The man who we bought it from was a toggle switch maniac.

The car had a siren. I didn’t know it wasn’t legal to use it to get people to move over. No harm, no foul. I wish I had that car back. Funny, that was when I realized how life wasn’t going to be a walk on easy street.

That dreams are just that without action to go with it.

Jeeps. I have always loved them. 1 CJ 5, bright yellow, 1 dark blue 97, and a white 06. My ex still has that one. The last model with round lights. Jeeps are just cool.

I love the stock models, and would do anything for a CJ2, that was post war. It was a two wheel drive. These represent the years of hard work all over the state. A divorce, and I found that a great attribute was being a workhorse.

My life mirrored this vehicle.

I now drive an old VW convertible. Not vintage, but it is 11 years old, going on 12. Some things work on their own time schedule. So it is like a big question mark what will work.

It is like driving a game. I now have an easy look on life. A fancy car isn’t what makes me happy, but older cars with personality. I have always been overall in a good place with this car.

He is a good luck charm for me. That is why I will never sell him.

My next car, will be an Amphibian car late 60’s. Tied with a Nash Metropolitan. The white with turquoise convertible. These are my cars that I will go until I get one of these.

And that is where my life is now. An old car that represents a good time for the country, and my family. It will be the prize when I can purchase it from my writing.

Then? I will need a new car to shoot for. That is what “drives” us to go for our dreams. Yes, they are practical, get our kids to school, drive us on our first dates, to fun concerts in college. The list just doesn’t stop for what our cars say about our lives.

Where we have been and where we want to go. It will be in my water car that I get there.
