Plug-In Hybrid Electric Cars

Advantages of Plug-in Hybrid Cars

Plug-in hybrid cars or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles . called PHEV (or PHEC) for short, are vehicles that have an internal combustion engine and an electric motor that can be fully recharged by connecting it to a power source. Although plug-in hybrid cars are the most common kind of PHEVs . there are actually other kinds of vehicles, such as scooters, trucks, and trains, that fall under the classification.

PHEVs are gaining popularity because of the many advantages they bring.

The first advantage that come to mind when PHEVs are mentioned is usually the savings due to their fuel efficiency. This is especially important these days due to the rising cost of gas. Although PHEVs incur a cost for the electricity used to power them, the cost of electricity is still a lot less than the cost of gas.

Furthermore, it is estimated than a kilowatt hour of battery capacity of PHEVs is equal to about 50 gallons of gasoline, which means that the savings from hybrid cars are really considerable.

Another advantage of PHECs over traditional vehicles is its impact to the environment. PHEVs are definitely environmental friendly compared to traditional vehicles because they consume much less gas. Furthermore, PHEVs also do not contribute to air pollution when they are put in emission-free electric mode .

PHEVs also have an advantage over other non-plug-in hybrid cars because of the various ways they can be charged. Hybrid cars also use an electric propulsion system, aside from their internal combustion system, leading to savings in gas, but cannot be recharged by plugging it in to the power grid. PHEVs, on the other hand, rely not only on the electric motor s inverter to charge its batteries like ordinary hybrid vehicles do, but can be plugged in to on-board charges (i.e. vehicle kits such as extra batteries) and off-board chargers such as gas stations or in your own garage.

Last but not the least, PHEVs have the advantage of having the ability to help supply power back to the grid during peak hours through the vehicle-to-grid technology (VTG or V2G). Vehicles can be plugged into the power grid anytime, but what happens with the vehicle-to-grid technology is that the vehicle is only charged during off peak hours. During peak hours, charging automatically stops so that PHEVs do not add to the already heavy load needed during these times.

More importantly, the electricity stored in PHEVs that remain plugged in during the peak hours can be considered as an additional source of reserve energy, which, if really needed, can be tapped so that the energy can be returned to the power grid. This technology is already possible and available, but is yet to be used or implemented. However, if it is put in place, vehicle-to-grid technology will certainly be helpful in balancing loads in the electric grid, and thus a useful tool for fighting gridlock.

It is understandable though if this will take time to be implemented since a lot has to be laid out in terms of new laws that will protect both the interests of PHEC owners and big power companies.
