Renault, Bollore to Collaborate on Electric Cars

12 September, 2013 11:04:00

Renault announced partnership with French industrial holding group Bollore to strengthen its presence in the electric car market.

Following the success of Autolib in 55 municipalities in and around the Paris region, and the contracts already won by the Bollore Group in Lyon, Bordeaux and Indianapolis, the Renault and Bollore groups will look at the possible founding of a joint venture to win and implement new projects in order to meet growing demand in France and on international markets for electric car-sharing services.

In the first instance, Renault could join forces with the Bollore Group by taking a stake in Bluely (Lyon) and Bluecub (Bordeaux).

The expected increase in the number of Bluecars — the existing 4-seater model — and the convertible model to be launched next June will lead to a rise in production. The two groups will look at the possible transfer of some production processes to the Renault group’s Dieppe plant, alongside the supply of parts and components by Renault.

Autolib, the world’s biggest electric-car sharing service to date, is now entering its third year in operation, and data show that three-quarters of rentals concern a maximum of three passengers.

As a result, the two groups will look at the possible support that Renault could provide the Bollore group for the development and production of a three-seater electric vehicle (3.1m long) based on a Bollore Bluecar with an autonomy of over 200 km (124 miles).

In a related news, Paris’s Autolib electric carsharing service has filed a complaint for industrial espionage after two employees of a firm that works for German carmaker BMW were found closely scrutinizing the scheme.

The two technicians, who work for Aachen-based engineering company P3, were arrested on September 5 after being spotted using electronic equipment to conduct tests at Autolib’ recharging stations. The following day, the alleged spies were once again seen at an Autolib station, this time in the city’s second arrondissement.

P3 is an engineering firm contracted by BMW to lay the groundwork for its upcoming I3 electric car .

Both P3 and BMW France have denied the allegations, which come two days before the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show .

BMW said it was just testing the charging points for compatibility with its new electric model, the i3, soon to hit the market. P3 said it had been commissioned by several manufacturers to carry out standard tests on charging systems and denied any interference with the stations.

Launched in December 2011 by the Bollore group, the Autilib program has 34,000 subscribers paying to use 1800 electric Bollore Bluecar EVs in Paris and its suburbs. The Bollore group is expanding the scheme to other French regions.
