What is a Zero Emissions Vehicle?

Who Built the first Electric Car?

In 1832, Robert Anderson of Scotland designed the world’s first electric carriage. Later in the year 1835, Professor Stratingh of Groningen of Holland in collaboration with his assistant Christopher Becker conceptualized an electric car and it was built in the same year by Thomas Davenport.

What is an Air Powered Vehicle?

This category of Zero-Emission Vehicle uses compressed air as fuel. The engines are fitted with tanks to store large amount of air in them. When the air gets exhausted, the vehicle has to be recharged in air-filling station. Many leading automakers have conceptualized vehicle prototype utilizing hydrogen gas as fuel.

CityCAT TM is the world’s first air-powered zero emissions car, launched in August 2008. It was conceptualized by an ex-Formula One Engineer Guy Negre (leading Luxembourgh based MDI firm) and manufactured by Tata Motors Ltd, India’s largest automaker. Each vehicle costs $12,700.

Till date, only a handful of CityCAT models are seen running on the road. It can store 340 liters of compressed air and reach a maximum speed of 68 mph. Once fueled, this amazing car can travel a distance of 125 miles.

CityCAT TM was never launched in America due to its all-glue construction. MDI is planning to launch the vehicle in 12 different countries, including Israel, South Africa, and Germany.

Advantages of Air Powered Vehicle:

Air Powered Vehicle qualifies as 100% Zero-Emission Vehicle.

Air Powered Vehicle is much lighter compared to conventional vehicle. This feature helps them to travel faster .

Manufacturing cost of Air Powered Vehicle is less, hence the market price of this vehicle will be cheap.

Disadvantages of Air Powered Vehicle:

Air filling station have to be powered by electricity. Now electricity produced by coal pollutes the environment through emission of harmful gases.

Air Powered Vehicle may face problem in long distances. where air refueling stations may not be present.

Air Powered Vehicle is very fragile. If it encounters any accident, compressed air tanks can explode and cause fatalities. To avoid such deadly consequence, manufacturers are using carbon fiber to make the air tanks so that they crack instead of bursting.

However, the crack can cause compressed air to leak which can eventually end up in a much shoddier crash.

What is a Wind Powered Vehicle?

A Wind Powered Vehicle transforms the wind energy into electric energy. This electric energy runs the vehicle. A Wind Powered Vehicle consist of pre-installed wind turbines and valves which absorb wind power and coverts its kinetic energy into electric energy. The electric energy is stored in a DC battery and the vehicles’ controller (power diodes) converts the DC to AC voltage.

A volt meter controls the flow of current from the battery. The accelerator and gear system is attached with the connector. The controller provides full voltage to the accelerator and eventually the vehicle moves ahead.

The accelerator is connected with few potentiometers which help to maintain the vehicles’ speed. Air conditioner and vacuum braking system are available in many models of Wind Powered Vehicle.

Wind Powered Vehicle is highly efficient and never suffers from overheating which is common in conventional vehicles.

The battery is continuously charged by the wind power. In conventional vehicles, batteries are to be charged after a specific period of time.

Wind Powered Vehicle is not widely available. Most models are still in prototype phase.

What is Solar Powered Vehicle?

A Solar Powered Vehicle is provided with solar panels consisting photovoltaic cells that transforms the solar energy into electric energy. This electric power controls the primary and auxiliary components of the vehicle.

A Solar Powered Vehicle has good speed and does not emit any pollutants.

Disadvantages of a Solar Powered Vehicle:

The solar panel which houses the photovoltaic cells is expensive. This increases the overall cost of the vehicle.

The lifespan of the photovoltaic cells is very less. Besides, PV panels are mostly designed for stationary installation. They are not hardy enough to withstand vibrations of a moving vehicle.

The photovoltaic cells made of glass are both bulky and heavy. They increase the gross weight of the vehicle.

Solar Powered Vehicle has to be incorporated with batteries to operate in sunless conditions. These batteries increase the weight and cost to the vehicle.

What is Water Powered Vehicle?

A Water Powered Vehicle runs on Brown gas(HHO). The HHO gas in generated when electricity passes through water, and splits it into hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen present in HHO gas runs the vehicle. This technology is over a century old.

The first Water Powered Vehicle was launched by the Japanese company Genepax.

A Water Powered Vehicle runs on a moderate speed of around 60 kmp.

There is less carbon built up in a Water Powered Vehicle. Hence the maintenance cost is very less compared to conventional vehicle.

Water Powered Vehicle restricts conservation of fossil fuels .

Water Powered Vehicle is highly economical.

In US, Water Powered Vehicle enjoy tax benefit under the Power Policy Act of 2005.
