Jaguar mulls crossover and gas-electric powertrain from C-X75

Jaguar may put the 205mph gas-electric C-X75 supercar concept — hailed as the car of the 2010 Paris Motor Show for many — into production, and is considering a crossover SUV.

The car was seen as an attempt by Jaguar to create a genuine halo car, something not seen in the Jaguar range since the XJ220 in the early 90s.

But the C-X75’s unique gas-electric powertrain — capable of outputting an enormous 778bhp and almost 1200lb-ft of torque that drive the C-X75 to 60mph in 3.4 seconds — seemed certain to limit the concept to appearances at motor shows.

The Jaguar concept uses four 195bhp electric motors — one for each wheel — and two gas turbine generators that can recharge batteries of briefly drive the wheels directly.

Speaking at the Detroit Show, Jaguar brand director Adrian Hallmark suggested that the car, or the powertrain, could be taken forward to production in some form.

There is a potential for this technology and if we could get it to work it would be great.

There are a lot of technical issues to be addressed, such as dealing with the heat from the exhaust, but it would be great if we could get it to work.

It would also be great for a British company to do it. But we are seriously looking at it.

Smaller saloons and a Jaguar crossover?

Hallmark also confirmed that smaller Jaguar models are on the cards, with a smaller saloon and a crossover under consideration.

[If] you look at the market globally, saloons still dominate while crossovers are showing the biggest growth in the luxury segment, commented Hallmark, five weeks into his new role at Jaguar.

We already have the money confirmed to develop a new body system for a new generation of cars. What styles we put on this is not yet decided and we will take a few more months to think about this.

He added that Jaguar will stick with front engine, rear-wheel-drive luxury vehicles, while confirming that all-wheel-drive on Jaguar models is a likelihood in the future.

For us to be a full player in this segment we have to have all-season capability.

However, Jaguar will not borrow technology or expertise from Land Rover in an effort to stress the difference between Land Rover’s off-road ability and high-performance Jaguar models.

Lower emissions

Jaguar is looking at the technology in an attempt to drive down fuel consumption and CO2 emissions across the Jaguar Land Rover range — and has pioneered the use of lightweight aluminium in its model range.

Hallmark confirmed that Jaguar is also investigating stop-start systems, classic hybrid and high performance systems.

A smaller diesel engine will be introduced late in 2011.
