110-MPG Jeep Renegade Concept Gets 400 Miles With Diesel-Electric Combo: Detroit Auto Show Preview

DETROIT We love to get our tires muddy. And we’ve had some fun already with our long-term Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited. But now Jeep is whetting our appetite with a look at what future runs through the muck and mire might be like with its Renegade concept.

Chrysler continues their movement toward building vehicles incorporating environmentally responsible electric-drive technology. And they are focusing their efforts through their new in-house ENVI organizationa group Chrysler established last year to develop electric vehicles and advanced propulsion technologies.

The Jeep Renegade Concept is powered by dual 200-kW (268 -hp) electric motors juiced from a lithium-ion battery pack. The Renegade uses one electric motor per axle, a true low range and locking differentials, which, if brought to production, would bring true 4X4 capability to the world alternative fuel vehicles.

Like Chrysler’s ecoVoyager concept. the Renegade’s electric mode has a range of 40 miles. However, utilizing a range extender 1.5-liter 3-cylilnder BLUETEC diesel engine, this Jeep can handle a 400-mile trip. The whole shebang translates into fuel economy as high as 110 mpg.

The basic platform consists of lightweight aluminum wrapped in a sleek exterior design incorporating large bulging fenders; open door skins interior components are constructed of environmentally responsible materials. Topping it all off with a low-cut speedster-like windscreen.

True to its outdoorsy persona, the Renegade has no top but features a full roll bar behind which a verity of “lids” can be selected, each configured for a particular ancillary activity such as mountain bikes or kayaks.

The interior is built much as a boat interior might be with openness and storage cubbyholes everywhere. The soy-based foam seats, the doors as well as the one-piece molded interior compartment are all environmentally friendly components.

The open cockpit design and large oversized tires appear to lean more toward dune surfing than rock crawling. However, the Jeep folks contend the Renegade displays a personality and capability of “one with nature” no matter the terrain

We like this rig. So we think Jeep should throw us the keys soon, so we can run the dunes at Pismo Beach with the Renegade. Okay, yes, we also believe in Santa Claus.

Let’s hope this one makes it to production. Ron Moorhead
