Your Jeep has an open rear differential if only 1 wheel was spinning in your low traction condition you have an open differential. You can easily trick them into being limited slip by applying the brakes slighly, which will slow the spinning wheel down and it will then send a bit of power to the other wheel.

Limited slip would give you a bit of single tire spin as the limited slip clutch pack or however the differential is setup in that case then it would provide limited power to both rear wheels however they would never completely lock together which is what a Locker gives you. Limited slip in some vehicles is great, other vehicles its not so great in the way some are setup to do like I mentioned above and apply the brakes to the slipping wheel and that causes a power transfer to the non-spinning wheel but this system operates using the anti-lock brake feature in many newer vehicles so its not really mechanical in nature, its just controlled by the traction control system in many cases.

A true locking rear differential gives just that, when one tire is spinning so is the other. These also have different characteristics depending on the brand of locker. Some of them such as the ARB are operated by a small air compressor, and when you flip the switch you have instant true 2WD meaning if one tire is spinning at 20mph the other tire on that axle is also spinning at 20mph.

Now some other brands of lockers have variable clutch packs where a certain amount of wheel slippage has to occur in order for the locker to engage, while others can even vary the amount of lockup available. Lockers however should be only left to offroad situations only, there s no need for them in everyday driving conditions even in snow/ice. These lockers can make an easy drive to the store in a snowstorm pretty eventful if you aren t extremely careful. The ARB I mentioned leaves your differential in an open mode during everyday operation but flip a switch and you have instant 2WD.

There are also electric ones, and some are automatic like a Detroit Locker for example the driver doesn t have to do anything for it to engage. This can be very dangerous to someone not experienced in driving with a locker and can cause immediate loss of vehicle control.

Your Jeep is equipped with a standard open front and rear differential from the factory, but there are many different options out there to give you either limited slip or a fully locking differential, but in most cases isn t necessary. I drove my 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4×4 all over the mountains, trails, etc. Mud, snow, everything and never once got stuck and it had open front and rear differentials.
