Jeep Renegade Concept

There’s actual meaning behind the Jeep Renegade concept’s name. Although this two-seater stays true to the automaker’s reputation for off-roading, there’s also a big focus on the Renegade being both eco-friendly and sustainable.

The Renegade was first introduced at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, which was shortly after Daimler AG (then known as DaimlerChrysler) sold most of its stake in Chrysler.

Although the concept is a plug-in vehicle that can travel for up to 40 miles on electric power alone, it also employs a Bluetec diesel engine — which is Daimler technology — to significantly extend its driving range to more than 400 miles.

For those Jeep purists who are most interested in off-road prowess, the company offers several interesting tidbits about the Renegade in terms of its ability to keep up with adventurers.

As one might expect, the concept utilizes a 4×4 system, complete with low range and locking differentials. It gets oversized wheels and tires, a cut-down windshield, and rubber-clad headlamps and tail lamps.

The Renegade does have a roll bar, but is still very much a convertible. The cargo deck just aft of the cockpit can be fitted with different lids depending on the activity the occupants plan on participating in on any given day, whether it’s mountain biking, kayaking, or whatever else strikes a person’s mood.

The Jeep Renegade concept’s interior actually the entire vehicle is designed to minimize the number of parts necessary for assembly and function, said Scott Anderson, principal interior designer of the Renegade concept. We designed the Renegade with an eye toward simplification of systems, both in parts and processes.

The interior includes yaw, pitch, and roll indicators on the passenger side, built into the fluid-fill gauges.

The inside of the Renegade was purpose-built for ease-of-use, adaptability, and eco-friendliness according to Jeep. For instance, the instrument panel is symmetrically balanced, making it easy to be built for both left- and right-hand drive applications.

The colour, grain, and gloss of the interior parts are molded in one piece, and Jeep says the no-gloss exterior colour of the composite body is molded in, meaning there’s no need to use solvents that are present in automotive paints.

The HVAC system, meanwhile, isn’t coolant-based, and the wireless interior as a whole was designed to be hosed down. There’s even a drain in the floor, and the floor mats are designed to funnel water to the opening.

The rest of the interior is a mix of the high-tech and the functional. The doors include canvas-pull handles, while a circular LED screen housed within the steering wheel lets the person behind the wheel choose the drive mode. Buttons are used to shift the vehicle between Park, Reverse, and Drive positions.

A unit in the centre console plugs into the battery pack, allowing passengers to either heat or cool food during their adventure, and the seats are made of scuba-like waterproof materials that Jeep says are both soft-touch and flexible.

To get you where you’re going, the Renegade employs a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder diesel engine and two electric motors, combining for 383-horsepower. Jeep claims fuel economy numbers reaching 110 MPG.
