Kia Niro Concept Acts Like a Four Wheel Drive When Needed

Published: February 13, 2014

Kia s green theme at the Chicago Auto Show included the Kia Niro concept, on display in the US for the first time.

You may recall that the Niro first debuted at the Frankfurt Auto Show last fall, and it was the talk of the show because of its dihedral butterfly doors. These doors are reminiscent of the cars on Miami Vice . or the Delorean from Back to the Future.

The Niro concept has a version of Kia’s turbocharged 1.6-liter ‘Gamma’ engine, capable of 160 horsepower. The engine and a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission serve the front wheels while an electric hybrid system powered by regenerative braking delivers up to 45 horsepower to the rear wheels when driving conditions call for more power.

Kia says, The Niro hints at a possible future B-segment contender ready to take on the city environment with style and fun-to-drive attitude, featuring a mix of contrasting materials and compact, purposeful dimensions.

Does this mean Kia is considering an addition to the Kia cars in the form of the Niro? It s hard to believe Kia would make a production model with butterfly doors, but it s a lot of fun to think about!

Car makers bring these cars to auto shows to gauge the public s reaction to them. Usually, we see some elements, usually from the design, that appear on the next model year of cars in the form of updates.

It seems at least possible that Kia s next year models of its SUV s will bear a resemblance to the Niro. The hybrid electric drive system, designed to make the vehicle perform like a four wheel drive when needed, is certainly an interesting concept on cars and SUV s alike.

January Sees Another Record for Kia Optima, Soul Sales

Published: February 3, 2014

In early January, we talked at length about the sales numbers for the whole of 2013. We also told you about how several industry analysts commented that 2014 might not be as strong for sales as 2013 because of pent up demand that had finally been spent in 2013.

Well, Kia s numbers are in, and January 2013 was another record month for the car brand! Kia says it had a record month in January, with the Optima leading sales (no surprise there, right?) and the Kia Soul, selling 9,979 and 8,092 units, respectively.

Kia has a couple of big, newsworthy things coming up. First, the K900 will make its way to Kia dealers nationwide sometime in the first quarter of 2014. The K900 was introduced to the public during Super Bowl yesterday in a commercial that saw Laurence Fishburne reprising his role as Morpheus in the popular Matrix movie.

The K900 is the brand s first ever luxury car. And once again, depending on who you ask, Kia is either brilliant for bringing a luxury vehicle to market, or they K900 will fail miserably because everyone is so used to Kia making inexpensive cars. We might be biased, but we re confident that the Kia K900 near Oak Lawn will sell very well.

Kia also said that it is introducing a redesigned Kia Sedona and the Soul EV will launch in 2014 as well. The Kia Sedona took a year off for 2013 but returned in 2014. We suspect that the Sedona will be more polished thanks to Peter Schreyer, the Chief of Design for Kia.

All the Kia vehicles have been made over, and the Sedona had some updates in 2013 but we re expecting some pretty cool stuff to happen with the Sedona for its next redesign.

The Soul EV will also prove interesting, too. It will be Kia s first electric vehicle. Some critics said they did not expect the Soul EV to sell to the mass market because of price.

The EV market is hot right now, especially in large cities. The charging network is expanding as more people adopt EV s, and the price will likely come down in the years ahead.

It looks like 2014 is off to a great start for Kia!
