Kia technology revealed at CES 2014

Kia technology revealed at CES 2014.

Kia has confirmed it will launch its first global market fully-electric car later this year.

The South Korean car maker announced a suite of new infotainment technologies under the UVO banner at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, including a specific system destined for an electric car to be launched in the US before the end 2014, likely a battery-powered version of its all-new Soul mini SUV .

The UVO EV smartphone app provides up-to-the-minute information on the vehicle s battery level, distance-to-empty readings and has the ability to search for the closest charging station stations if required. Owners can then pre-set the charging time as well as remotely start the air conditioning system so the vehicle is ready to go when they arrive back at the car.

It will be an extension of the UVO system to be introduced on the new Soul s In-Vehicle Infotainment Concept, which was also previewed at the CES, which features a massive removable 20-inch multi-touch centre console, a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster and a widescreen 18-inch head-up display unit.

With UVO, Kia has a strong base to build from in the advancement of telematics and infotainment technology, pushing the boundaries of connectivity and convenience while maintaining safety as a top priority, said Henry Bzeih, chief technology strategist at Kia Motors America.

Kia s teams are constantly looking for new and better ways to strengthen the relationship between driver and car.

The centre console unit provides access to a suite of infotainment features, including Kia s proprietry music service where users can personalise their playlists according to their mood or choose from five different templates according to a variety of driving conditions, such as summer tunes if you are driving along a coast road.

Through vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication in the future, the system can also alert drivers of potential hazards ahead such as frontal collisions and lane-departure warnings as well as impending road conditions.

The TFT instrument panel displays a 3D view of the car s dials — including conventional dials such as a speedo and tacho — and uses eye-tracking technology to maintain a clear-view for the driver from various angles. It is supplemented by the oversized head-up display that, Kia says, gives drivers an augmented-reality snapshot of vital information such as speed, navigation directions and traffic directions without taking their eyes off the road ahead.

The system also has a gesture command function that uses a series of infrared light and camera sensors to understand a series of pre-programmed movements for drivers to quickly access audio and navigation functions with simple hand or finger movements.

The User-centred Driver Concept also has a wireless charging system for mobile devices with a magnetic induction pad in the centre console.

From as early as next year, Kia will update its voice recognition software so users can dictate messages through the vehicle and introduce its own UVO-based app store so owners can customise their infotainment systems and download apps such as Yelp, which allows users to locate the hottest restaurants and nightclubs near their location.

Kia has offered an electric car, the Ray, in its home market in the past. However, as Kia Australia general manager of public relations Kevin Hepworth indicated to Drive, the new global EV confirmed at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas could well be a plug-in Soul, as that car has been on trial in South Korea for some time.

For Australia, electric vehicles in such a small market means it’s hard to justify offering the car based on the numbers you would sell, Hepworth says. But we’re happy to look at something like that if it comes along, but it will be a long time away.
