Kia reveals Soul EV, coming late 2014

By John Simpson 07 February 2014

Kia will bring its first ever electricity-powered plug-in vehicle to the UK towards the back end of 2014, and the numbers revealed so far make it a worthy rival to the Nissan Leaf.

Revealed this week at the Chicago Auto Show, the Soul EV will initially go on sale in North America in Q3 2014 before plugging into European and UK showrooms shortly after.

It is driven by a 81.4kW electric motor, producing the equivalent of 109bhp, identical to the recently revised Nissan Leaf and a similar output to the new 1.5 diesel Nissan Qashqai .

This is enough power to ramp up to 62mph in around 12seconds with a top speed of 90mph, again very similar to the current Leaf (11.5secs, 90mph).

The Soul EV uses a 27kWh 360v lithium-ion polymer battery capable of delivering 80-100 miles of real world driving. Initial tests have pushed its range to over 100 miles.

A total recharge from a regular household plug socket can be completed just under five hours while a 80% rejuice takes 33 minutes from a 50kW fast charger.

The battery is located in the floor of the car, beneath the back passenger seats. This eats into rear leg room only slightly, raising the floor by 3.1 inches, and consumes 144 litres of boot space (5.1 ft³), leaving 540 litres to play with.

A regenerative braking system can recapture up to 12% of the car’s kinetic energy, which is fed back into the car whenever coasting or braking.

Without the sound of an engine to warn pedestrians, a Virtual Engine Sound System emits an auditory alert at speeds below 12 mph and whenever the car is in reverse.

Prices won’t be revealed until closer to its launch but the Soul EV is estimated to cost around £25k. The petrol and diesel-fuelled second gen Soul is expected this spring.

Recent comments from Kia UK’s Commercial Director Yaser Shabsogh hinted the EV would receive a soft and small introduction to the market.

“We won’t be selling hundreds of them — maybe a couple of hundred, mostly in the key metropolitan areas,” he said. “The biggest question at the moment is not where we will be selling them but the support for these cars — the servicing and charging networks.”

Kia’s exhibition space at the Chicago Auto Show also revealed the revised Optima hybrid saloon but there are currently no plans to bring it to the UK.
