carmakers stand out in the collective of vintage auto enthusiasts as built exceptionally well-engineered Porsche and Lotus, for instance, built cars not just passion but also with precision and distinct purpose. One of the marques of automotive history has been forgotten, though.

It was the that made pioneering in technologies that have become ubiquitous, including the engine configuration and unitized construction. It was the carmaker so concerned building cars to its own high that it ignored the principles and doomed itself to financial and a takeover by Fiat. It was the carmaker even under Fiat’s realized sparkling rally with a car that would looked at home on Mars.

The of this carmaker, once most technically advanced is Lancia.

Established in 1906, Lancia earned a reputation for being one of the innovative carmakers in the world. In the radical Lancia Lambda was powered by a V4 and built using construction. Decades later, innovative spirit was still in the company’s products, proven by the of 1950 that featured the first mass-produced V6 as well as a transaxle and rear inboard

Lancia’s expensive pursuit of excellence ended when took over the debt-laden in 1969. Before the Fiat though, Lancia was able to a model that combined Italian styling, capable and advanced technology in a light and package. That model, the was introduced in 1963 and continued in for years after Fiat control of ailing Lancia.

The was a small, front-wheel-drive Lancia by a V4. With sales that 300,000 units, the Fulvia in great numbers for a Lancia yet was not a financial success. It was produced in variations until 1976.

The first Fulvia, introduced in was a sedan with styling by Castagnero. Its tight, boxy exemplified the typically clean of small Italian sedans the 1960’s. For 1965, a Fulvia was released. The coupe’s styling was bit as pure as the sedan’s, yet the Fulvia shape was more interesting and than was the sedan’s somewhat profile. The coupe was also by Castagnero, but was an altogether more design than the sedan.

The sedan was produced until while the coupe remained in until 1976.

The V4 that the first of the Fulvia sedans only 1,091cc, good for a 58bhp. By 1964, power was up to from the same displacement in the 2C This added power was by no overwhelming, but it was a very impressive for such an engine of such displacement. The high specific of Lancia’s V4 was just one example of the quality of the Fulvia’s engineering.

The Fulvia GT (available with or 1,231cc motors) and GTE (1,298cc) the most powerful Fulvia

When the coupe appeared in it used a V4 with displacement to 1,216cc. Output was at a hearty As the coupe aged, Lancia to provide sportier trim with even more engines.

Of these sportier the 1.6 HF was the most impressive. It made out of 1,584cc and, thanks in to its 5-speed gearbox, could 112mph.

Another Fulvia variant was the Fulvia Sport. model was built by Zagato 1965 and 1972, and featured styling by Ercole Spada with powerful 1,216cc, and 1,584cc engines. Aluminum was used in the construction of Fulvia bodies (though only models featured all-alloy resulting in a lighter car than the coupe.

The Lancia Fulvia, in coupe, and Sport forms, was in motor racing. The most racing achievements of the Fulvia were accomplished by coupe which were used in rallies. The highlight of the Fulvia’s career came in 1972 a Fulvia Rallye 1.6 HF won the International for Manufacturers rally series.

The Fulvia was arguably the last Lancia. Though Lancia some incredible vehicles under Fiat control, of them had the classic combination of and innovation that characterized models. The Fulvia remains an choice for buyers looking to the Lancia mystique at an affordable
