Sep 8, 2000 — Lancia will unveil its ultimate high-tech concept car at the Paris ‘Mondial de l Automobile’ late this month. Called NEA (Greek for ‘New’) the Lancia show-car anticipates what its luxury, middle class will be like: a concentration of digital technology delivering traffic interactive safety, intelligent transport road guidance, full time connectivity, ultimate on-board comfort and plenty of voice-activated conveniences.

Sensors, electronic controls and electric servo systems makes the driver s job less demanding and more accurate and rewarding whereas the passengers are kept busy with all sort of entertainment and gadgets, from DVD to e-mail and WAP communications.

The Lancia Nea is futuristic inside and out. And its imaginative style is consistent with its hi-tech content. The car features strong lines and broad shoulders that suggest great strength.

It also looks high and compact to adapt more effectively to town requirements.

The first thing that strikes you is the clear roof. This is held up by the frame and sinks beneath the glass at the front of the car as though it were a stick submerged in water. It is an example of the play of transformations between visible and invisible, physical and virtual, that characterises the car.

The Nea’s sculpted appearance is reinforced by the fact that the grille is built into the hood and is evident only as a bas relief, a virtual grille. The headlights also add to the futuristic appearance. They are arranged like the slats of a Venetian blind and are self-adaptive.

The Nea was also designed with young people in mind. For this reason, the interiors are trimmed with pale wood that gives the car class and up-to-date appeal. Other metals and cloths used in the interior call to mind the strength of titanium and the softness of cashmere.

At first sight, the passenger compartment is understated without any unnecessary frills. The floor pan is completely flat and the seats are free to move around within a large passenger environment. Space becomes ‘luxury’ and the switch between physical and virtual objects (services and information) creates a new possibility for living.

Apart from the steering wheel and controls, the driver’s area is occupied by a totem surmounted by the CD mastering device and a wave-shaped facia that almost hangs behind the steering wheel. This houses the instruments and controls and three screens that relay images from external TV cameras.

Made of a soft, bump-proof gel that offers psychological security, the ‘wave’ is transparent and the impression it gives is of displays floating in space, for the first time calling to mind the concept of virtual interface that we have thus far only seen in science fiction films.

With the Lancia Nea, the future shows itself today and begins to accustom us to new life-styles featuring the mounting quantities of information around us and the different ways of finding such information and of using it where and when we wish.

Our sources suggest that the design of this Lancia NEA anticipates the look of the Lancia Delta replacement, much like the Dialogos anticipated that of the Lancia k replacement due to be released next year.

Unlike the Dialogos that was just a mock up, the NEA is a running prototype. Lancia plan to unveil the NEA in Paris and to demonstrate the prototype later on, likely at the ITS World Congress in Turin early next November.

The operational prototype, designed by Lancia Centro Stile under the direction of Peter Robinson has been constructed by I.DE.A. Institute.
