Introduction

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is a 7-passenger luxury SUV designed for maximum performance both on and off of the pavement. It is completely redesigned this year, significantly lighter in terms of weight and equipped with a new supercharged V-6 engine, which combined help to improve fuel economy. The interior is also much larger, and Land Rover can install an occasional use third-row seat.

The Range Rover Sport’s closest direct competitors are the Audi Q7, BMW X5, Infiniti QX70, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and GL-Class, and the Porsche Cayenne.

Models and Features

The 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport is sold in SE, HSE, Supercharged, and Autobiography trim levels.

Upgrading to HSE trim supplies buyers with Light Atlas exterior trim, premium perforated leather seats, heated front and rear seats, a heated steering wheel, heated windshield, universal garage door opener, upgraded exterior mirrors, adaptive xenon headlights with High Beam Assist, fog lights, and a panoramic roof.

Select the Range Rover Sport Supercharged and, in addition to a more powerful V-8 engine, the SUV is equipped with 20-inch aluminum wheels, upgraded brakes, and an Extra Duty package with a 2-speed transfer case, locking rear differential, torque vectoring, and Adaptive Dynamics continuously variable suspension dampers. Inside, the Supercharged trim level has a 12.3-inch virtual gauge display.

The Range Rover Sport Autobiography adds tri-zone climate control, 16-way power-adjustable front seats with ventilation, center console cooler, an 825-watt premium sound system with 19 speakers, park-assist sensors, Blind Spot Monitor, Closing Vehicle Sensing system, Reverse Traffic Detection system, and a Surround Camera System. It is set apart from other trim levels by its Gloss Black exterior trim, red-painted brake calipers, and dark engine-turned aluminum interior trim.

Options and Packages

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

All versions of the new Range Rover Sport have a premium paint option, a contrast-color roof, and aluminum wheel designs up to 22 inches in diameter. A selection of headliners and cabin trims is offered, as well as power-adjustable 5+2 rear seating, a rear-seat entertainment system, and an adaptive cruise control system with Queue Assist and Intelligent Emergency Braking. Additionally, a number of dealer-installed accessories are also offered for the various Range Rover Sport trim levels.

Choose the Range Rover Sport SE and you can upgrade the SUV with a panoramic glass roof as well as a Climate Comfort and Visibility Pack that adds heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, heated windshield, universal garage door opener, upgraded exterior mirrors, adaptive xenon headlights with High Beam Assist, and fog lights.

The SE and HSE trim levels are available with a 19-speaker Meridian premium audio system, HD Radio, and satellite radio. Both versions can also be optioned with a Vision and Convenience Pack (Blind Spot Monitor, Closing Vehicle Sensing, Reverse Traffic Detection, Surround Camera System, park-assist sensors, soft door closing) and an Extra Duty package. Additionally, the Range Rover Sport HSE offers greater variety in terms of paint and interior selections, and can be fitted with a 4-zone climate control system, 16-way power front seats, ventilated front and rear seats, and a center console cooler.

Range Rover Sport Supercharged SUVs can be upgraded with the same options offered for the HSE trim level, plus larger brakes, red-painted brake calipers, a 1,700-watt Meridian audio system with 23 speakers, and a Supercharged Dynamic package containing numerous interior and exterior cosmetic enhancements accompanied by an increased top speed of 155 mph, according to Land Rover.

The Autobiography trim level is offered with unique exterior styling enhancements and an extensive number of color and trim options for the cabin. Additionally, this version can be fitted with soft door closing, a heated windshield, ventilated rear seats, 4-zone automatic climate control system, and a 1,700-watt Meridian audio system with 23 speakers. This is the only version of the Range Rover Sport offered with Land Rover’s new Parallel Park Assist technology.

Under the Hood

A new supercharged, 3.0-liter V-6 engine resides under the hood of the Range Rover SE and HSE, generating 340 horsepower and 342 lb.-ft. of torque, which is delivered to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission and a permanent 4-wheel-drive system with a single-speed transfer case. Automatic start/stop technology is standard, designed to improve fuel economy by shutting off the engine when idling in traffic or at intersections.

The Range Rover Supercharged and Autobiography trim levels have a supercharged, 5.0-liter V-8 engine producing 510 horsepower and 461 lb.-ft. of torque. The 8-speed automatic and an Extra Duty package with a 2-speed transfer case and other hardware upgrades come standard with this engine.

Fuel Economy

The Range Rover Sport SE and HSE are rated to get 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg in combined driving. Choose the Supercharged or Autobiography versions, and those figures are 14 mpg, 19 mpg, and 16 mpg, respectively.

Safety Ratings and Technology

Crash tests have not been performed on the redesigned 2014 Range Rover Sport, and because of the model’s high price and low sales volume, it is unlikely that this SUV will be rated for crashworthiness in the near future.

In terms of safety technologies, the SE, HSE and Supercharged trim levels have a number of options available, including park-assist sensors, a Blind Spot Monitor, Closing Vehicle Sensing system, Reverse Traffic Detection system, and a Surround Camera System, features that come standard on the Autobiography trim level. Adaptive xenon headlights with High Beam Assist are standard for all Range Rover Sports except the SE version, and all are offered with an adaptive cruise control system with Queue Assist and Intelligent Emergency Braking.
