2014 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

Shorter, sportier version of the luxury British Range Rover

Gary Witzenburg on 11.26.2013

The 2014 Range Rover Sport clearly demonstrates how far Land Rover, and especially its top-scale Range Rover brand, has come since its 2008 change of ownership.

New Direction

Powertrain

Agile begins with a major 800-lb. weight reduction vs. the outgoing 2013 Sport, thanks to its new, 25-percent-stiffer all-aluminum unibody architecture, a version of the full-size Range Rover’s (and a technology shared with recent Jaguars). It’s accomplished through an advanced 4-wheel independent air-spring (double wishbone front, multi-link rear) suspension with automatic load leveling, terrain-sensing, cross-link valving and four driver-selectable modes (from lowest to highest): Access, Standard, Off-road and Extended Height.

The latest Land Rover Terrain Response 2 system offers five settings — General, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl — through a console-mounted rotary switch, plus an Auto setting that automatically selects the best program. Each one adapts the responses of the engine, transmission, differentials, and chassis systems to optimize traction and drivability, and they are complemented by Hill Descent Control (HDC), Gradient Release Control (GRC), Hill Start Assist (HSA), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Traction Control (ETC), and Roll Stability Control (RSC).

The Supercharged V-8 models’ Terrain Response 2 system has a dedicated Dynamic mode that stiffens the suspension, tightens the steering and enhances performance for enthusiastic on-road driving. A Torque Vectoring by Braking feature uses selective light braking to simulate the enhanced handling effect of a torque-vectoring differential, while Adaptive Dynamics uses variable dampers to continuously balance ride and control.

Brakes are power 4-wheel discs with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Advanced Emergency Brake Assist (AEBA), 4-channel all-terrain Anti-lock Brakes, electronic parking brake and Emergency Brake Lights. Steering is energy-efficient electric power rack-and-pinion. Wheels and tires range from standard 19-inch to optional 20-in. 21-in. and terrain crushing 22-in. ground clearance from 8.4 (Standard) to 10.9 in. (Off-Road), approach angles from 24.3 to 33 in. departure angles from 24.9 to 31.0 in. and ramp break-over from 19.4 to 27 in.

And the 2014 Range Rover Sport will happily wade through up to 33.5 in. of water.
