The original Range Rover was, in my opinion, rubbish. It the styling of the Range Rover, but managed the larger car’s grace. It had ‘Sport’ emblazoned the back, but should have hung, drawn and spatchcocked for advertising. It was as sporty as a fish and supper.

Heavy. Unwieldy. small for the still considerable footprint. The number one aspirational car for dealers, thick-browed footballers and yoof.

A cliché, but unnervingly It’s like, a Range innit.

Being brutally Land Rover would to struggle to make the RRS any worse. But I wasn’t expecting much this mid-life facelift. A bit CO2, a few more mpg, wallow to go with your followed by a new, slightly subtle suite of digital to stop you punching a cleansing through the front windows of the Met

When it turned up, the was softened by the new look. It’s now a mini Range Rover. If one past on the opposite carriageway of the you’re going to have to be to spot the differences.

Two horizontal barsin the grille and two fingers of in the lights instead of three for the RR proper. New twinkly lights and back, new smoothed-out front and bumpers — the general of the mid-life crisis but an unusually sweep nonetheless.

Easy to but actually, I really like the Rover, so the fact that the now looks like it is no bad thing. The fog have moved down and The front now has a big swathe of horizontal free of clutter, and the foglights lower and set further apart the RRS look both wider and planted.

There’s also a bigger, horizontal air intake under the bumper that bulks out the stance. It does exactly Land Rover Design (and LR board member) McGovern says it does. It manages to look, remarkably, like a scale-wonky photocopy it did before.

It hangs together well indeed. Very

It looks much better but that’s only half the I can only assume that who bought previous-generation RRSs really like driving. they did buy the Range Rover In droves.

Both Land biggest-selling model in certain and also its most profitable those who buy the RRS are obsessed with baublage. Put it this way: were very few bone-stock RRSs with cloth on wheels rolling out of the factory.

The interior is also new, and as better as the outside. More Rover, less Austin It’s still got the cockpit bisected by the centre console, but materials look and feel than before. Plus, the new to the centre console and general of the all the major controls means there’s less of a sketchy to switch placement.

It makes and looks more sensible

And everything simply works little bit better, from the TFT film transistor) screen in the binnacle, to the satnav with a hard drive. Problems? It got the depth of the first-class experience of the Rover. Your head the roof if you sit in the back and are 5ft 10 or more.

The clock front and centre in the looks like a cheap of a Panerai watch, and the glovebox with a twang of crackling It does not feel as soft, as engineered, as thorough as the bigger

But it drives roughly 50 per cent than before. The new LR TDV6 diesel with twin turbochargers (basically the same as in the Jag XF D S), is brilliant. Quite a thrummy and nearly 30 per cent more than the old 2.7.

Add that to 36 per more torque than and you realise that hitting in under nine seconds feels quite brisk. more useful in-gear is where you feel it most: you can with confidence rather crossed fingers.

Corners dare I say it, also things to be rather than feared too. Thanks to new Adaptive operatingon the damping, the new Range Sport handles far, far than before. It’s a fat old thing at easily over 2.5 but it no longer feels quite so and uninterested. The steering is more even though it loses at higher speeds and can still numb. Also, the revised feels much more of handling the usual daily

Less roll, more more like you imagine it have been in the first basically. And off-road it’ll do things that you really believe — pointless for 99 per of RRS owners, but deeply impressive.

isn’t so much a re-fresh as a proper overhaul. The new Range Sport looks better, better, has a better interior and improved engines. It might not get my over a new Discovery 4 or a slightly Range Rover, but you have to Land Rover has finally a decent fist of making the RRS up to its name.

It might not be the TDV8 Range you really should want, but at £14k cheaper, it’s no the joke it once was.
