The 2013 CT 200h may be in its third model now, but it remains the only of its particular niche: the luxury hybrid hatchback. It’s the compact car from the luxury now that it has quietly killed the HS 250h hybrid sedan three years on the market and few sales.

While the CT is smaller and out than the Toyota Prius model, it may appeal to some of the buyers. It’s a surprisingly fun-to-drive, and feature-packed little and if those car shoppers want the mileage of a hybrid but also a little more luxe the top-level Prius, the CT 200h may be the car for them. On launch, it also a high degree of technology—which hoped would attract buyers—though it’s less in that regard than it was in

The only element of the Lexus CT it with the Prius is the powertrain: It has the 98-horsepower, 1.8-liter four-cylinder and Hybrid Synergy Drive That system uses a of electric motor-generators powered by, a battery pack, located the rear deck (which the CT a disappointingly shallow load The battery stores the electrical produced on engine overrun and regenerative braking, and uses it to the traction motor to propel the car on only (at low speeds and under loads) and otherwise supplement the torque.

But the CT’s secret sauce out to be the tuning: It’s far sportier the wheel, though hardly a hot in the mold of the Volkswagen GTI or Mazda By far the most fun is the clever Sport which remaps the control of the accelerator and hybrid system. full electric assist at partial throttle, it’s got a lot oomph—and the temptation will be to it in Sport mode all the time.

The mode also cleverly the power gauge in the instrument into a red-rimmed tachometer, the hybrid system still engine speed separately accelerator position—making a tach a superfluous. But it’s a neat Sadly, as with seemingly all products, the electric power remains numb—putting the Lexus CT at a compared to sportier hatchbacks luxury brands, like the A3 or the smaller Volvo C30 three-door.

The EPA rates the 2013 Lexus CT at 42 mpg combined; our experience is that mileage in mixed use hovers 40 mpg. That requires to ignore the roar from the as it’s revved (and to ignore the Eco gauge). That’s far than any hot hatchback, and also than the Volkswagen Golf TDI VW’s research indicates buyers won’t consider and vice versa, so the two cars may not compete.

The CT’s closest on mileage is likely the Mazda3 with the new 2.0-liter SkyActiv which is rated at 33 mpg combined but us a remarkable 38 mpg over our usual route.

Design-wise, the CT 200h hatchback is with a flat roof and an mien. It didn’t attract a deal of attention on the streets, but it’s a little slab-sided and from certain angles the rear pillars are thick small third windows appear to wrap around the hatch), the lines are distinctive and It’s fully 6 inches than a Prius, with 4 of that coming out of the wheelbase.

The console holds of controls, befitting the luxury though it will take awhile to sort through and learn the locations of common and knobs.

The front seats are particularly with a low and sporty legs-out position, though the rear are tight for two adults. The rear back folds flat, which offers a roomy area if just two people are the CT.

Because it’s a Lexus, the list—both standard and optional—is with far more items we could cover here. equipment includes keyless Bluetooth hands-free audio and streaming, fully integrated control, SiriusXM satellite and Lexus Safety Connect. include LED headlamps, rain-sensing and the Lexus real-time navigation and system called Enform.

For CT buyers who want a sportier-looking with stiffer handling and as well—Lexus dealers can install a line of F-Sport appearance and accessories.
