Everything you need to know about Lexus GS 450h F-Sport model

The F Sport includes returned rear and front suspension which is supported by adaptive variable suspension. The technology is believed to enhance body control and steering response. The vehicle is also equipped with the Lexus Dynamic Handling System which improves the four-wheel steering performance.

The machine

The vehicle boasts of Toyota’s hybrid synergy drive system with a 3.5-liter V-6, with output rivaling the GS’ V-8 counterparts from BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Combined output of the vehicle stands at 338 horsepower and is delivered to the rear wheels through Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT). The Variable Gear Ratio Steering automatically reduces the steering ratio by around 10 percent and the Electric Power Steering increases steering assist torque by four percent.

The vehicle achieves a speed of 60mph (96km/h) within 5.6 seconds and attains a top speed of 131mph (210km/h). Average fuel economy has improved by 30 percent as Lexus eyes the Super-Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle II (SULEV II) certification in the US. The vehicle might come up with improved aerodynamics but the typical blue themed badges would stay.

In the F-Sport’s cabin, the doors and seats are done in a matching deep red ‘Garnet’ shade. Also included are aluminum flourishes to the dash, a leather steering wheel and scuff plates with F-Sport badges.

The adaptive sports variable suspension set-up with four settings; Eco, Normal, Sport S and Sport S+ distinguishes GS F-Sport from the standard car and offers a more satisfying drive. For the first time a hybrid vehicle has come up with an integrated four wheel steering system with lighter sports brakes and large front discs. Also the customers can avail a more performance-tuned suspension setup and stylish interior upgrades.

The GS 450h has many other high-tech features—adaptive front lighting, heated and ventilated front seats, SmartAccess with push-button starting— this makes this vehicle undisputed in its category so far.

Things to watch out for

Other standout features include a rear spoiler, run-flat tires, an advanced suspension (requires run-flat tires), adaptive cruise control (includes Pre-collision system) and a 14-speaker Mark Levinson surround-sound stereo. Safety features has adequately been taken care of in the vehicle. Antilock brakes with brake assist, traction control, stability control, front and rear side-impact airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints assure you to throw caution at the wind.

The infrared steering wheel mounted camera sounds an alarm when any danger is detected and alerts the driver.

The thing that might however get prospective customers thinking for a moment is that the new hybrid battery eats up significant trunk space and consequently the vehicle accommodates only 10.6 cubic feet of luggage, a somewhat poor mark compared to its earlier GS models. The Hybrid badges are also small and rather easy to miss on the 2011 Lexus GS 450h.

The bottom line

The vehicle is called 2013 GS 450h, probably because its slated to hit the markets in 2013. As far as its comparison with BMW 535i goes, the vehicle fares better with its strong acceleration and high city fuel economy. The highway fuel economy, however, takes a slight beating, but cannot be an excuse to think otherwise.

The Lexus GS 450 h far exceeds the earlier model of GS 350 in terms of driving experience of a hybrid vehicle. The vehicle costs an additional $12,000 compared to GS 350 and $3,500 compared to GS 460. It’s a luxury sedan with superior acceleration and scores highly on fuel economy.

The style quotient has been enhanced to appeal young. With the vehicle being targeted at controlling emissions and improved performance, it offers to give you delight and satisfaction in equal measure. Something that is hard to get these days.
