Up recently, there were two of the Lexus GS executive saloon to between: the V6 petrol engined GS 250 and the hybrid GS 450h. The GS 250 is no more, It’s been quietly to make way for the car you see here, the GS 300h.

It too a petrol engine with and an electric motor, making the GS an all-hybrid line-up for the time

While the flagship Lexus GS uses a 3.5-litre V6 engine, the new GS has a smaller 2.5-litre four-cylinder making it not only cheaper to buy but to run too.

Low running costs

those low running costs Lexus hopes will woo buyers. The GS 300h is aimed at the business market, with keen to point to its low Benefit-in-Kind tax and private fuel savings.

The SE model averages a claimed and emits only 109g/km of meaning BIK tax rates of 13 percent at the of writing. That’s far more than the old GS 250, which muster only 31mpg and

Do bear in mind, however, the GS 300h’s CO2 output and fuel rises as you go up the trim levels as models are fitted with flashier wheels.

Luxury trim well

There are four trim available: SE, Luxury, F Sport and Tested here is the Luxury which includes leather sat-nav, heated seats and rear (and ventilated in the along with numerous safety systems. These a blind spot monitor and Cross Traffic Alert, warns of approaching traffic either side when out of a parking space.

Luxury is the Lexus expects to sell the of, making up 45 percent of forecast GS sales.

Like the 450h, all of the 300h feature a simply display screen for the multimedia in the centre of the dashboard controlled, by a mouse. Different menus and are selected by nudging an oblong pad the gear selector forwards, and sideways.

It’s an interesting but one that’s fiddly in practice and at quite distracting if you need to your eyes on the road.

The GS is a long, wide car which a luxurious amount of space That does mean it a big, heavy car on the road but an easy and relaxing car to drive

We’ve previously tested the powerful GS 450h hybrid and the GS 300h is noticeably slower, also much quieter the 450h.

Both models use a CVT variable transmission) automatic which doesn’t have a number of ratios like a gearbox. In the 450h it can make for progress as it often requires the to use high revs for prolonged but in the 300h it’s much of an issue.

It’s an impressively car at almost all speeds and though it doesn’t feel particularly it’s swift enough for situations. Less impressive is the which on our Luxury trim car’s 18-inch wheels lumpier than you’d of an executive saloon.

The hybrid system allows short-distance operation under power only (activated via a of the ‘Drive Mode Select’ the gear selector) and uses a of electric and petrol power normal driving.

Unfortunately, the 450h, it’s not a very car to drive. A further twist of the Mode Select control ‘Sport’ mode, which the throttle response and adds resistance to the power steering.

We drove the GS 300h in F Sport which includes larger wheels, adaptive suspension and an ‘Sport Plus’ mode firms up the dampers, makes the almost intolerably heavy and nothing to improve the driving – the car’s nicer to drive the selector left in Normal

Whereas the GS 250 was too thirsty and the GS 450h too for most fleet buyers to the GS 300h really does a genuine alternative to the usual diesel saloon suspects BMW, Audi and Jaguar.

a sub-120g/km CO2 output and entry-level below £32k it’s now worth looking at for company car who fancy something different.

In Lexus expects the 300h to GS sales in the UK.

Keen drivers look elsewhere and the fiddly interface and occasionally harsh frustrate too, but build and refinement levels are excellent and you can top-notch aftersales service

Lexus counts the GS’s rivals as being the BMW 520d, A6 2.0 TDI, Mercedes E220 CDI and XF 2.2d.

The 300h really can claim running costs against all as well as something different in of character, but do try before you buy to make it’s for you.

The Lexus GS is available to order now with starting in January 2014.
