Motoring:Lexus ES300h

Lexus’ new ES300h is seriously comfortable, impressively quiet, loaded with gear and decidedly frugal on fuel!

These front -drive ES’s, are Lexus’ entry level, luxury sedans. They are priced from $80,995 for the 300h.

Engine options are either the 2.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid as driven or a 3.5-litre, petrol V6 for the ES350. There are Limited versions of both.

These cost an extra $14,000 and get a three-zone air-con, add cooling to the heated front seats and a concert class, 15 speaker Mark Levinson surround sound system and more.

ES’s are larger than the more sporty IS cars, but similar in size to the rear-drive GS models.

The previous ES looked similar to, and indeed were pretty much refined Camrys. These new models have a totally different platform and body for maximum space, refinement and comfort.

While they front up with the now distinctive Lexus family grille the, they have a “Euro” look about them with nicely flared wheel arches and sculpted sides.

And while the German competition offers a classy array of diesels, Lexus offers none, preferring to take a different approach to economy with premium, petrol-electric hybrids.

This hybrid system consists of the 2.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor working together to provide a combined output of 151kW. This drives through a vibe free, step-less, continuously variable transmission. It does its job really well, but there is a sequential manual shift together with sports modes if required.

Left to itself there’s an always-willing response and always a very usable amount of power both at cruise and on call for prompt overtaking.

From standstill 100kmh can be achieved in 8.5 seconds.

The petrol engine only sounds busy when hurried and the electric motor, naturally is almost silent.

For its size the ES hybrid is very frugal fuel-wise, with Lexus rating it at 5.5 litres/100km overall.

With my ever-varied driving, the computer average was 6.6l/100km and a 950km range. And of course there’s no RUCs to pay!

While the ES’s dynamics are comfort focused and deliver with a really plush ride, it is very well mannered through corners and the extra weight of the battery pack is not noticed.

The electric steering is very user friendly around town and it firms up sufficiently at speed.

Although not giving much in the way of “feel” it’s predictable and adds to the ES’ overall very easy driving nature and straight-line stability.

At cruise and under normal acceleration it’s super quiet.

Which is of course what one expects when travelling in the typically Lexus, VIP cabin with its impeccable décor, fit and finish, complete with soft-touch surfaces, loads of gear and quality leather furnishings.

With lots of power adjustments the driver’s seat is easy to set up.

There’s expectedly abundant space and cosseting comfort both front and rear.

The combination of this, the hushed ride and with the power rear window sunshade in place, seemed to habitually encourage snoozing passengers.

Meanwhile the driver appreciates the efforts made to make all the controls, info and communications systems so easy to see on the large screens and dials.

I particularly liked the easy operation of those various functions care of the “mouse-like” multi controller, the touch sensitive metal bars to change the temperature and the analogue clock.

This is completed by the sat-nav, a reversing camera, smart entry/engine start, the impressive standard sound system and sunroof.

Luggage-wise the power operated boot-lid discloses a practical 425-litres of space, so it’s not tightened up too much by the battery pack and you do have the reassurance of a full sized spare.

Safety-wise all ES’s in addition to vehicle stability/traction control and 10 air-bags have front and rear sensors, the reversing camera and blind spot monitors together with the maximum 5 star rating.
