Next gen Toyota Prius: Only cost matters

It s not about how many more MPGs the Prius can squeeze out, but how much cheaper it can become.

Prius fuel efficiency mostly tapped, but price is still critical

With the fourth generation Toyota Prius on deck, one might speculate as to what it would take to push the Prius to the next level of sales.

Here, many would focus on the battery. Toyota has to switch to lithium, they d claim. Others, might focus on making the plug-in version of the Prius Toyota s top seller.

But, really, only one thing matters: price.

These days there is far too much hype around lithium. The reality is, today s lithium technologies are simply not a viable mainstream solution, whether the focus is hybrid cars or pure electric ones. For more check out 10 years, minimally, before the plug-in revolution gears up? Still, lithium is the future.

Thus, if the Prius could move to lithium without a price increase, that would be a positive step forward.

In fact,  a pretty huge step forward for lithium.

Until then is fuel efficiency really the key selling point of the Prius?

Perhaps. And that s something that Toyota is, and has been, exploring. However, truth be told, there just aren t that many MPGs left to be squeezed out of the Prius.

Greater use of aluminum could help to reduce weight, but scale needs to reach much greater orders of magnitude to justify aluminum-versus-steel subsidies at least so believes Toyota.

Lower resistance tires might help, in the interim to aluminum, but how many more MPGs can you really squeeze out of more fuel efficient tires or even aerodynamics for that matter? The Prius is one of the most aerodynamic production cars ever mass manufactured.

The fact is the Prius is, basically, about as efficient as it or any other car is going to become to without revolutionary game changing technological breakthroughs. Or fundamental shifts in consumer psychology.

In a nutshell, it s not about a 70 mpg, $25,000 Prius. It s about a 50 mpg $20,000 Prius. Or a 53 mpg $15,000 Prius c.

Are such vehicles possible?

Based on InsideLine sources into Toyota s future Prius plans, the story is still fairly unclear.

Sure, Toyota might be able to squeeze out some extra MPGs here and there. But at the end of the day, the Prius already blows away the competition in terms of non-plug-in MPG.

But that s not really the key driver to sales. It s price. Thus, when it comes to the next gen Toyota Prius, it s only cost that matters.

And despite InsideLines s sources, we still haven t a clue about the price of the fourth generation Prius. So, sadly. we don t really know anything about the next Prius.
