Surprise, greenies: Electric cars are finding new footholds outside their usual places of power.

ChargePoint, the electric vehicle charging station firm based in California, has just released a study tracking the growth of EV sales between the fourth and third quarter of 2013, and it may not be limited to California s metropolitan areas anymore.

Number one is Atlanta. The 3,000-plus EVs sold in the Atlanta area over the final quarter of 2013 represent a stunning 52 percent increase in electric sales from the third quarter, more than doubling the figure found in Washington, D.C. at number two. At 21 percent, D.C.’s second-place ranking shouldn t come as a surprise to anyone who has to fill up a tank to sit in the area s traffic, or has seen the rabbit-like multiplying of Teslas inside the Beltway over the past year.

Portland, Ore. an area rife with progressive thinkers and a natural fit for EV popularity, is third at 19.4 percent.

The electric vehicle market is no longer just growing in California s metropolitan areas EV adoption is happening across the nation, says ChargePoint CEO Pasquale Romano. Romano believes that EV popularity is increasing because of the rise of charging stations like those of ChargePoint, the new coast-to-coast capability of Tesla s Supercharger stations and also because nearly every major automaker is coming out with a cool new EV.

For sheer numbers, Los Angeles is still the king of electric car sales even if for obvious reasons like California’s tough zero-emission mandates. With over 5,000 EVs sold in the last quarter of 2013 and 27,411 registered overall as of the end of the year the Los Angeles area leads the country for total sales and EVs on the road. Los Angeles (19 percent), the Bay Area (18 percent) and San Diego (17 percent) come in fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in terms of EV growth by ChargePoint s figures.

Detroit comes up 10th on the list; with 13-percent growth in EV sales in 2013 s fourth quarter, the Motor City is that much closer to living up to its nickname. Miami (14 percent) placed ninth on the list, with Seattle (14.4 percent) and Chicago (16 percent) just ahead.
