Model Years and Variations:

The Maybach 62 Landaulet is the very definition of exclusivity—only three were ever sold. Unveiled to the public at the Middle East International Auto Show in late 2007, the car was confirmed for production in early 2008.

Featuring an upgraded version of the Maybach 62S’s potent twin-turbocharged V-12 engine rated at 612 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, the 62 Landaulet is quick despite its massive size and bulk—about 6,400 pounds, depending on equipment. The zero-to-60-mph run takes place in about five seconds.

As its name suggests, the Maybach 62 Landaulet isn’t your normal ultra-luxury sedan; the Landaulet name references its unique top mechanism. A soft, powered sliding roof over the rear seats slides back to open the back half of the cabin to the elements. The opening/closing process takes just 16 seconds.

The front and rear sections of the cabin are fully enclosed and separate from each other courtesy of a removable glass panel; a hallmark of a true limousine.

Up front, the chauffeur gets a pleasant working environment; most surfaces are finished in leather. In the rear, nearly anything could be specified by the buyer, from gold-flecked black granite inserts to brilliant white leather and more. Opulence is the trademark of the Maybach brand, and nowhere was it so deliberately flaunted as in the 62 Landaulet.

Priced to start from about $1.2 million, the Maybach 62 Landaulet was never intended as anything but the ultimate in executive—or head-of-state—conveyances. Accordingly, it featured the best of parent company Daimler’s COMAND infotainment system, voice-activation controls, a Bose 21-speaker sound system, DVD entertainment, and electronic air suspension, in addition to its over-the-top interior decor. Optional extras for the rear include a partition-mounted 19-inch TV, the previously mentioned granite trim, and active ventilated seats.

Rear seating is the height of comfort—think luxury private jet more than the Mercedes-Benz S Class the Landaulet is based on. Fully reclining rear bucket seats, rear-seat foot-rests, four-zone climate control with active air filtration, a rear beverage cooling compartment (complete with champagne flutes), and an umbrella are also standard equipment. In place of the reclining rear buckets, an optional three-passenger bench seat is also available.

At 20 feet long and seating four or five, the Landaulet is not about being green—it’s about being grand. At this price point, it’s not so much about whether you’d prefer the Maybach 62 Landaulet to the Rolls Royce Phantom, the Bentley Flying Spur, or even the more ordinary Mercedes-Benz S600; it’s whether you’d like to add an iconic Landaulet ultra-sedan to your collection of world-class vehicles. The answer, naturally, is yes.
