McLaren P1

Leaked images show the British brand s new Ferrari -fighting flagship performance model almost mirrors the concept car preview model which was uncovered at the 2012 Paris motor show .

There are some changes compared with the McLaren P1 concept car, though. The P1 production model gains carbon fibre air-vents, a new mesh treatment at the rear and regular road tyres rather than semi-slick race tyres shown on the concept.

The overall design, however, is the same, with a prominent pop-up rear wing, slinky LED tail-lights, a pair of gulping air intakes on the bonnet, and eye-catching curved headlights.

The carbon-fibre-bodied McLaren P1 is powered by a reworked version of the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre V8 engine used in the McLaren MP4-12C and McLaren MP4-12C Spider . and adds even more grunt as it s teamed to an electric motor.

The mid-mounted petrol V8 produces 543kW, with the electric motor producing 131kW. In hybrid mode, the P1 pushes out 674kWm — a whopping 233kW more than the MP4-12C — and torque is rated at 900Nm.

McLaren has released some performance figures for the new P1. It says the car will sprint from 0-100km/h in less than 3.0 seconds; 0-200km/h in less than 7.0 seconds; and, amazingly, 0-300km/h in less than 17.0 seconds — or a full five seconds faster than the original iconic McLaren F1 model .

The electric motor doesn t just boost power — it can also propel the car for up to 10 kilometres.

The new McLaren P1 will be revealed at the 2013 Geneva motor show in March.

I still can’t warm to that front end styling, but everything else is MEGASTAR. Possibly the worlds best sports/supercar? The Pagani Huayra is right up there too.

Hypercar. Sounds like a teenager trying to sensationalise something. Its not doing anything different from another supercar.

The traditional classification for performance goes like thus:

Regular car

Super Car

Hyper Car

Hyper car was coined because there was a class of car that was so far and above other supercars in terms of either performance, luxury or exclusivity.

Eg,

Porsche 911 — Sports Car

Lamborghini Gallardo — Super Car

McLaren P1 Electric Cars

Bugatti Veyron — Hyper Car

The best looking hyper-car on the market, amazing the shapes that CFD lead to.

Its funny how the most important figure dry weight is omitted.

But they did say it would have 600hp/tonne. it has 900hp anyone good at maths i get 1500kg’s! which seems porky for a track car

I’m guessing it will even be a touch heavier than that if the 918 is anything to go by, but 400kg electric motors and batteries will do that.

Cars like this, the 918 and F70 are game-changing. exciting times ahead :)

That truly is a new generation supercar. It really does look a generation beyond anything on the market today. Yes, there are hybrid’s already doing their thing. but this McLaren P1 has moved the game into a new paradigm.

Another Ferrari challenger. Every so called super car has a goal and that is apparently to be better than Ferrari. McLaren at least make 1/2 a F1 car so they have a little credence but all others have none as they don’t have a history or the expertise in building cars that incorporate technology that makes a car be efficiently fast without wings and unnecessary bling.

Ferrari make cars and don’t have a benchmark, they are the benchmark. Perhaps its a journalist inspired line used everytime another fast car comes along?
