New McLaren P1 makes its official debut

McLaren has finally revealed details about its long-await P1 model, the successor to its popular F1. In fact, the P1 has been so hotly anticipated, MacLaren confirmed that at least 250 of its 375 production run have been sold, and over 500 contenders are jockeying for the final 125—all at the ticket price of $1.15 million.

So what makes the P1 so successful? What’s more, will it be one of the next top performers when it comes to Nürburgring lap times? Let’s take a look at some of the significant stats:

The McLaren P1 offers 903 horsepower and boasts a 0-62mph in 3 seconds acceleration. An electronic speed limit caps it at 217mph. Compare this to the F1 predecessor, which only had 618 horsepower and hit 60mph in 3.2 seconds (though topped its speed at 212mph).

The P1’s powerful output is supported by a McLaren-engineered powertrain with twin-turbo V-8, a 7-speed dual clutch automatic, and hybrid components. The electric motor works in tandem with the engine to produce the impressive horsepower and resulting 664 lb-ft of torque. Declutched from the driveline, the electric engine produces 177 horsepower and 192 lb-ft of torque on its own.

The P1 offers multiple driving modes, including Launch, Race, Track, E, and Sport, allowing for fast getaways, suspension height and firmness adjustment, power delivery, and other chassis settings. The chassis itself is a Kevlar and carbon-fiber MonoCage, weighing in at a mere 198 lbs, and combines the roof, floor, mounted air intake, engine air intake, and battery housing.

As a Nürburgring laptime contender, the P1 has already come up against some severe competition straightaway. Competing hypercars include the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche’s new 918 Spider, to name just a couple. However, initial reports indicate that the P1 is expected to easily outperform the competition, especially on racing courses or winding mountain roads.

In fact, Ron Dennis, the McLaren chief executive, went so far as to promise a sub-seven-minute lap time on the Nürburgring Nordschleife. According to him:

“[The P1] will be the fastest car in the world. That includes what has come before and what will come today. I am confident.”

McLaren also promises that the P1 will never compromise any performance aspect whether it’s on the road or a track, calling it a “Jeckyll and Hyde” car that is as rewarding for normal drivers as professional racers.

“It will be neutral to the novice and exhilarating to the expert,” stated McLaren program director Paul MacKenzie.
