This Weekend in Car Videos: McLaren P1 Teaser and Tim Allen s COPO Camaro

by Stanley Yee on 01.20.2014 03:15

A new WRC season starts, the McLaren P1 gets put to the test on the track, and Tim Allen shows Jay Leno his Camaro.

According to McLaren. the 12C was not designed purely for speed, but also to be usable on a daily basis. Evo magazine has had a long term 12C provided by McLaren, which has been performing daily driver duties as well as being a track car. This video goes more in depth about some of the 12C’s more technology-based features, in the distinct McLaren style. Every little detail on the 12C has the feeling that it has been carefully designed by a group of dedicated engineers, and every piece has a purpose. The rear wing, for example, uses hydraulics to lift to the first stage, then relies on aerodynamics to reach full extension.

After months of videos of the 12C sliding around a racetrack, it’s strangely refreshing to see the inner workings of the car and what it’s like to live with on a daily basis.

By now, any automotive enthusiast is likely to have seen a review of the Porsche 918 Spyder. In the trio made up of the Porsche. the LaFerrari, and the McLaren P1, the 918 was the first to make the rounds of automotive media. Next up, it appears, is the McLaren P1, sliding around a track in Bahrain.

It seems this is a pivotal time for cars, as more and more companies are starting to use hybrid drivetrains, including the next generation of flagship supercars. This minute long segment is just a taste of Autocar’s full video, teasing at what is a highly anticipated review.

The 2014 WRC season has started, and the first event will be the historic Monte Carlo Rally. Last year’s champion was Sebastian Ogier, as rally legend Sebastian Loeb decided to step down as a full time WRC driver. The twisting roads above Monte Carlo have proven to be difficult for many drivers, and this year was no exception. Here we see Mads Ostberg from an onboard camera to see exactly how slippery the conditions were on a single stage.

This year saw a number of crashes, as a mixture of rain and snow tested the skill of the drivers.

If anyone is as much of a car collector as Jay Leno, it is Tim Allen. His hot rod driving persona from Home Improvement is not actually far from his true passion, and his COPO-style Camaro shows this. Tim Allen’s 1968 Chevrolet Camaro has been subtly modified to resemble the early Trans Am racing cars, while hiding the modern engine and chassis.

It is powered by an LS7 from the C6 Corvette Z06, and features modern Brembo brakes behind classically styled wheels. To finish it off, it has a COPO badge, paying homage to the day when customers could custom order a Camaro with the more powerful 427 cubic inch engine.
