2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Car Review

When the CLK no longer in production, Mercedes has turned to an all new luxury coupe to coincide with the debut of the equally new E-Class Sedan this is the 2010 E-Class coupe sharing some C-Class underpinnings but at its heart a full fledged E-Class. The Coupe provides 2-door style and sporty intentions for the luxury bent. I drove both the Sedan and coupe at a recent media event in Las Vegas and their personas were similar.

The coupe perceives saddle enhancements inside and out to compliment its racing nature. The grill star for instance is unique to the coupe and the panorama roof is standard on all models. Just like in the Sedan the E-Coupe comes in rear drive E350 and E550 trims.

The V6 powered E350 has a 268 horsepower engine while the V8 E550 runs with a 382 horsepower and an impressive 391 pound feet of torque. The absence of a B pillar and the coupe’s 4.5-inch shorter wheel base contributes to a weight savings of as much as 400 pounds.

This car cuts with a desert passes with agile moves and a burst of exit power satisfying the luxury buyer but perhaps not meeting the highest expectations of the sports coupe driver. Just like in the sedan my biggest complaint comes from the detached steering feel when it’s pushed hard.

The E-Class coupe can still be a desirable driver’s car with modern amenities and innovative safety features. Some of which the current S-Class even lacks. All models come with a 7 speed auto while the E550 gets panel shifters acceleration best at sedan counterparts by 2 to 3 tenths or the E550 heading 60 miles per hour and a muscular 5 seconds flat.

I guess mileage is also improved with the E350 getting 18 MPG city and 26 highway, and compared with the CLK the price has been reduced, the E350 starts at $48,000.00 while the E550 comes in at $55,000.00. According to Mercedes don’t bother waiting for an AMG version which will be reserved for the Sedan. For Drive Time on yahoo autos, I’m Steve Hammes.
