The E-Class Saloon offers a range of diesel engines, all BlueEFFICIENCY-optimised to minimise fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. A choice of three 4-cylinder units includes the E 200 CDI — the lowest emitting model at just 137 g/km CO2 – and the E 220 CDI, which does 48.7 mpg combined with automatic transmission. The manual version is even more frugal, clocking up 53.3 mpg with CO2 emissions of just 139 g/km.

The new Cabriolet offers a choice of three advanced diesel engines, all BlueEFFICIENCY-optimised to increase output while reducing environmental impact. Two 4-cylinder units – the E 220 CDI and E 250 CDI – use twin turbochargers to maintain consistently high power output and minimal turbo lag while pulling away. Fuel economy and emissions for both vehicles are outstanding, with automatic versions recently benefiting from further reductions in CO2.

For drivers who require even more power, the Coupé also offers a formidable V6 unit – the E 350 CDI – that delivers 540 Nm of rated torque. Yet despite powering the coupé from 0 – 62 mph in 6.7 seconds, the automatic still achieves 41.5 mpg combined, with CO2 emissions of 179 g/km.

The latest addition to the E-Class Estate engine line-up is the E 300 BlueTEC HYBRID. It combines the benefits of an efficient 2.2 litre 4-cylinder diesel engine with a powerful 20 kW electric motor. This electric motor, discretely housed between the engine and transmission, assists the diesel engine when the car is accelerating – the boost effect – and is also used for recuperating braking energy.

At low speeds it can drive the vehicle under electric power alone while the efficient 4-cylinder diesel engine takes over at higher speeds.
