2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Sedan Wagon: the ambassador gets better

When I think of the Mercedes-Benz brand, I can’t imagine a model that represents them better then the E-Class. Perfectly sized and available in a plethora of body styles and trims, the E-Class is getting revisions for the 2014 model year in order to remain a solid choice in a very competitive segment.

BARCELONA, Spain The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class has not been completely redesigned, yet the changes are substantial, including front and rear styling, new safety technology, more advanced multimedia systems and eventually new powertrains for North America. And since it already outsells rivals such as the Audi A6 and the BMW 5 Series, an evolution of the current-generation car was a more logical decision. For now, anyway.

On the twisty country roads surrounding Barcelona, we got to sample sedan and wagon versions of the new E; as before, coupe and convertible body styles will also be available, too.

Updated look inside and out

While the current E-Class’ sheetmetal seems to have been designed with a chisel, the new version is softer but more sophisticated. The quad headlight clusters have been replaced with rounder, one-piece units that incorporate LED daytime running lights and, on certain versions, LED headlights as well. The taillights have also been revised, again using LED technology.

The rear fender bulges that used to curve around the wheel wells have been straightened out, so the side profile of the car has changed, and there are new alloy wheel designs. As with most new Mercedes models in Canada, an AMG body kit will be standard, but not on every version. Finally, there are three new available colours, but don’t worry you can still choose between no less than three shades of silver.

The E-Class’ cockpit receives revisions as well, although some are easier to spot than others. They include a more upscale dashboard grain, a sportier three-spoke steering wheel with a repositioned turn signal stalk, new metalized centre stack buttons, a new instrument cluster and this is exciting the addition of an analog clock. There are also new upholstery colour combinations.

The powertrain line-up

As for the model line-up, pay attention because it may get tricky. In the case of the sedan, the E 300 4MATIC, E 350 4MATIC and E 550 4MATIC are back with the same engines. The E 300 and E 350 are still equipped with a 3.5L V6 (248 and 302 hp, respectively) while the E 550 keeps its silky twin-turbo 4.7L V8 (402 hp, 443 lb-ft).

The E 350 BlueTEC model is a goner, replaced by the E 250 BlueTEC 4MATIC which boasts a 2.1L turbodiesel four that produces about 201 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque; the sacrifice of a lower output is lower fuel consumption, as low as 4.2 L/100 km according to European ratings.

In addition, an E 400 HYBRID will be offered on order only, which will combine the 302-hp, 3.5L V6 with an electric motor and a battery pack, while the E 400 4MATIC will arrive for the 2015 model year packing a new twin-turbo, 3.0L V6 good for 329 hp and 354 lb-ft. All the aforementioned engines are matched to the familiar seven-speed automatic with manual mode. As for the E 63 AMG, it gets more power and all-wheel drive for 2014 and is covered in a separate review.

The wagon is again available as the E 350 4MATIC, and like the sedan, the E 63 AMG version now gets the brand’s 4MATIC system.

Confused? You’re not alone, and I won’t even talk about the other diesel engines that are offered in Europe, including a turbodiesel hybrid powertrain. Here’s what you need to know: there is an engine for anybody, whether you’re into horsepower, fuel economy or a combination of both.

The drive: just like before

The car’s underpinnings are virtually unchanged compared to the 2013 version. Down the windy roads on the outskirts of Barcelona, the 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class behaves just like it’s been doing for the last few years.

That means a well-dampened suspension that exhibits minimal body roll, and a steering rack that provides good road feel. The car is solid, quiet and devours kilometre after kilometre of twisty tarmac without a hint of complaint. Driving an E-Class is always a soothing experience.

New gadgets

The 2014 E-Class offers an ever wider selection of driver assistance systems. Among them are BAS PLUS and PRE-SAFE Brake, brake assist systems that detect crossing traffic and pedestrians and can automatically boost braking power to prevent or mitigate a collision at speeds up to 50 km/h.

Active Park Assist and a 360-degree camera system will also make its way into the E-Class, as will a new multimedia connectivity system called Drive Kit Plus which integrates an iPhone to the COMAND interface; you can now keep your buddies up to date with Facebook and Twitter updates while you drive as well as listen to Internet radio.

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan and wagon will be on sale in Canada in April or May, although the E 250 BlueTEC will only arrive at the end of summer. Pricing has not yet been announced, but if we exclude the AMG models, it should range between $50,000 and $80,000.

With more features, more engine options and updated looks, Mercedes-Benz’s ambassador should have no problem staying ahead as the Canadian sales leader in the tough mid-size luxury car segment.
