The W116 Edit

Mercedes S-Class W116 US Market Version

The Mercedes-Benz W116 was a series of flagship vehicles produced from September 1972 through 1980. The W116 automobiles were the first Mercedes-Benz models to be officially called S-Class, although earlier sedan models had already unofficially been designated with the letter ‘S’ — for Sonderklasse or special class.

The ‘new’ S-class generation development began in 1966, which was only a year after the launch of the W108/09. It was subjected to numerous studies before it was fully matured to make its debut. This was the first Mercedes saloon to feature the brand new design idiom which was to be continued until 1993 when the 190 was discontinued, its new design was a dramatic leap forward with more masculine charismatic lines which combined to create a well rounded elegant yet sporty character.

The overall basic design concept was actually inspired from the R107 SL-Class roadster, especially the front and rear lights.

The most notable W116 was the high-performance, limited-production 450 SEL 6.9 which was the first production car to use a completely electronic 4-wheel multi-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS), as an option from 1978 on. This V8 model boasted the largest engine installed in a postwar Mercedes-Benz up to that time, and also featured a self-leveling hydropneumatic suspension.

The 300 SD sedan (USA and Canada only) had a turbocharged 3.0 L I5 diesel engine developed from the record breaking C111 experimental vehicle.

Production totaled 473,035 units. The W116 was succeeded by the W126 S-Class in 1979. The W116 was sold throughout Europe, the Americas, Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Australia.


The W116 S-Class incorporated a broad variety of Mercedes-Benz safety innovations.

Anti-lock brakes were first featured on the W116 S-Class. This system, true to its name, prevents the wheels from locking while braking. The advantage of such a system is to improve steering control during hard braking situations, and to shorten brake distances.

Strengthened body structure. The W116 featured a more stable security passenger cell with a stiffened roof frame structure. High strength roof and door pillars, along with other reinforced zones, provided enhanced vehicle occupant protection.

Interior equipment safety features.

A heavily padded dashboard, deformable switches and controls, and a four-spoke steering wheel with impact absorber and broad impact cushion aimed to reduce occupant injury during collisions.

The fuel tank was no longer fitted at the rear end, but was now placed above the rear axle for added protection.

Wraparound turn signals made it easier to communicate with nearby drivers.

The W126 Edit

The Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by German automotive marque Mercedes-Benz. Premiering in September 1979 as the successor to the earlier W116 line, the W126 was the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz flagship to officially bear the S-Class name referring to Sonderklasse or special class. The W126 was initially offered in straight-6, V8, and turbo diesel sedan models. In September 1981, 2-door coupé versions of the W126 were introduced. Compared to its predecessor, the W126 was more aerodynamic, fuel efficient, capacious, and powerfully engined.

The W126 S-Class debuted a new Mercedes-Benz design style which was subsequently used on other vehicles in the company’s lineup. The W126 line also introduced many Mercedes-Benz safety innovations, including the first airbag supplemental restraint systems, seatbelt pretensioners, and traction control.

The W126 had a twelve-year production run between 1979 and 1991, the longest of any S-Class generation since the flagship models were first built in the mid-1950s.

Airbags, as an additional measure of occupant protection. The driver side airbag premiered on 1981 models, as an optional extra (standard from 1985 on 500 SEL and 500 SEC), and the passenger side airbag premiered in 1986 (as an optional extra; due to its expense, few early production W126 cars were thus equipped). The passenger side airbag became standard in 1989 for the 560SEL and standard in 1991 for all models.

Traction control system (TCS), also known as Acceleration Slip Regulation (ASR) to prevent wheelspin (a Mercedes-Benz first). Available only on European models from 1989 until the model year 1991, when it was introduced on 560 SEL and SEC models in the United States for that last production year only.

Seat belt pretensioners ETR enabled all seat belts (with exception of rear centre lap belt on sedans) to tighten when the car sensed conditions that could lead to an accident (such as sudden, forceful braking).

Crumple zones which absorbed impact energies, reducing passenger injury.

Fluted taillights continuing the design pioneered on the W116, a design that helped maximise visibility of taillights from behind the car even when extremely dirty.

The W140 Edit

The Mercedes-Benz W140 was a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by the German automotive company Mercedes-Benz. The car premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1991, with the first examples rolling off the production line on August 6, 1991. Short (SE) and long (SEL) wheelbase sedans were offered initially, as well as the coupé (SEC) body style from October 1992.

Like all Mercedes-Benz lines, the W140 S-Class was rationalized in late 1993 using the new letter-first nomenclature. The SE/SEL/SEC cars were renamed the S-Class, with alphanumerical designations inverted. For example, the 500SE became the S500, and the 500SEL became the S500L.

In 1997 the coupé models following a mid-life update were separated into the CL-class. The W140 series S-Class was superseded by the W220 S-Class in 1999 after an eight year production run, the coupé by the C215 CL-Class for model year 2000.


The W140 S-Class introduced several safety innovations which have since become commonplace among many vehicles.

Braking system. The V8 and V12 W140 models distributed more braking power to the rear wheels, increasing stopping effectiveness. In 1996, the W140 received Brake Assist, which engaged during emergency maneuvers to boost braking power to maximum.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) was introduced in 1996. ESP used on-board computers to improve vehicle handling response during difficult driving conditions. This was a Mercedes developed system, which has since been licensed to other manufacturers.

Side airbags and seat occupancy sensors were introduced in 1996.

The W220 Edit

The Mercedes-Benz W220 was a series of flagship sedans which constituted the Mercedes-Benz S-Class during the early-to-mid 2000’s. Development for the W220 S-Class started in March 1996 and finished in August 1998 spanning a total of 29 months. The W220 (and similar W215 CL-Class coupés) started production in 1999. The W220 was a replacement for the earlier W140 S-Class after the 1999 model year.

Compared to its predecessor, the W220 had somewhat smaller exterior dimensions but offered more interior space, particularly in the long wheelbase versions (although the boot is smaller than on its W140 predecessor). Production of the W220 totalled 485,000 units, slightly more than the production totals from the W140. Production ended in 2006 when the W220 and W215 were replaced by the W221 S-Class and the W216 CL-Class.

In many European countries, the diesel S320 CDI version became the most popular model, making it the first S-Class in which a diesel engine achieved broad appeal.


Pre-Safe, the integrated Mercedes-Benz collision avoidance and response system, debuted with the W220 S-Class.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and Brake Assist were standard features for difficult driving conditions and emergency maneuvers.

The W220 S-Class added standard front and rear side curtain airbags. In total, the W220 features 8 airbags: 2 frontal (driver and passenger), 4 side airbags (one in each door) and 2 window bags.

LED brake lights were also standard issue on the W220. LED brake lights illuminate faster than conventional bulbs.

The W221 Edit

The W221 is the codename for the Current Mercedes Benz S-Class it was introduced in 2005 to replace the ageing W220.


Brake Assist Plus: an optional system designed to apportion brake pressure based on pedal speed and distance between the car and objects. This is an evolution of the Brake Assist system found on earlier models, and uses the vehicle’s radar, in addition to the usual Brake Assist’s monitoring of pedal depression speed, to apply power brake boost as required. This requires the optional adaptive cruise control’s radar, so in vehicles not equipped with the latter, standard Brake Assist is substituted.

Pre-Safe: a development of the previous Pre-Safe system fitted to the W220 S-Class, which uses vehicle-dynamic sensors to predict collisions, the W221’s system also takes into account closing speed, as measured by the vehicle’s radar. If a collision appears likely, Pre-Safe closes all windows and the sunroof, moves all passenger’s seats and their head restraints to a safer position, and tightens the seatbelts.

Electronic Stability Program (ESP): similar to the systems fitted to other Mercedes vehicles, this system measures driver inputs and compares these to the vehicle’s path. If these diverge, ESP brakes single wheels selectively to eliminate oversteer (fishtailing) and understeer (plowing), and reduces engine power, if necessary.

Night View Assist: optional, uses two near-infrared (NIR) illuminators mounted in the headlamp clusters and a sensor in the windshield. The infrared beams are picked up by the sensor and an image is displayed in the instrument cluster. Mercedes-Benz claims that this system provides the same viewable distance as high-beam headlights, without blinding oncoming motorists.

The W221 also contains many other safety features, including front and rear crumple zones, eight dual-stage air bags, seatbelt pre-tensioning devices, anti-lock brakes (ABS), collapsible steering column, and traction control.
