Mercedes-Benz is the latest in line of automakers to enter the electric car market in Denmark in response to tax brake for electric and hybrid-electric vehicles.

Since then, Sweden’s Saab and Volvo, France’s Aixam, USA’s Tesla Motors and China’s BYD have all announced plans to enter the Danish market with electric or hybrid-electric cars.

Now Mercedes-Benz has signalled that it is joining the fray. Their aim is to introduce an electric version of the Smart, which is already a fairly familiar sight on Danish roads in its diesel and petrol engine versions. The electric Smart is due to go into production at the end of 2009.
