AMG skunkworks revealed

We take a look behind the gates of the German tuning house that turns Mercedes-Benz limousines into muscle cars.

The electric supercar is almost here.

Mercedes-Benz has shown off its radical SLS AMG E-Cell, which borrows the … styling of the born-again Gullwing supercar but replaces that car s V8 engine with a bank of batteries and four electric motors.

Mercedes-Benz AMG executives have already said the upcoming electric Gullwing will be as quick as the V8-powered SLS AMG it s based on, despite the additional 450kg of weight courtesy of batteries and electric motors.

A prototype of the electric SLS AMG

Due on sale in 2013, the first apparently driveable E-Cell sports a bright yellow paintjob (officially called AMG Lumilectric Mango) that certainly catches the eye — but what s under the colourful shell is enough to make your eyes water.

Four electric motors (two at each axle, meaning the electric Gullwing is all-wheel-drive) pump out a colossal 880Nm of on-tap torque which helps propel the E-Cell from a standstill to 100km/h in only four seconds.

Peak power is a hefty 400kW, giving it almost as much power as the V8-powered Gullwing it s based on and even Ferrari s latest 458 Italia.

Lithium polymer batteries produce a combined 480kW of power, most of which is sent to the electric motors. There are two boxes of batteries one behind the cockpit and one where the traditional driveshaft would sit along the length of the car in the centre of the floor.

The rearmost battery pack helps keep the weight balanced, the central pack helping to keep the centre of gravity low. All that electricity isn t just going to the wheels, though.

There s a very contemporary looking 10-inch touch-screen display in the centre console, and the gauges look reminiscent of a space shuttle s control system, as though straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Keeping all the electrics cool (or, conversely, keeping them warm when needed) are a pair of separate cooling circuits that help maintain a safe operating temperature in the battery banks.

You ll be able to tell the difference from the outside, thanks to some minor changes including a new front splitter and a newly designed pop-up rear spoiler help keep the car from taking off at higher speeds.

The recently released SLS AMG petrol-powered model is already known for having one of the most brutal engine notes on the road, but there s no word as yet as to what soundtrack the electric SLS will have.

There have been reports, though, of a synthetic sound system being adapted to allow other road users and pedestrians to hear the otherwise-silent E-Cell coming.

First electric supercar? What about the Tesla? Maybe it’s the first produced by one of the powers. Well I’ve already promised myself a Porsche for when my son leaves home, as long as it’s electric.

Gullwing doors are really stupid. When they are opened fully, they will hit the roofs of many low-headroom garages. When they are being opened when the car is parked next to another car, they will hit the other car and prevent passengers from exiting. Check the arc when gullwing doors are being opened and you will see. Look at the photos in the article.

So what’s wrong with conventional doors? In fact, the most logical car door is the sliding variety — same opening as a conventional door, but no problems when other cars are parked adjacent. Gullwing doors are what happens when designers have impractical flights of fancy and convince manufacturers to actually build their follies.

Can I drive it from Melbourne to Sydney? If not, we have a problem.

Ziggy, look up the history of the original gullwing and why the doors were chosen for that car. This is paying tribute to that car, it’s not done for practicality.

I haven’t seen the full arc of the gullwing doors on the SLS, but it doesn’t appear to go too wide compared to conventional doors. A low roof will definitely be a problem, though.

As for sliding doors, there are other issues with those compared to conventional doors. For starters, they’re less practical in a crash, they are more complicated for building and maintenance and they’re also heavier.

Filster, the Tesla is a sports car, not a supercar.

Nathan, most cars can’t go Sydney to Melbourne without refuelling, so the question is how long to get the charge up again.

Gullwing doors are NOT really stupid. Dare we say that in present day motor design, It’s rare to see something unique. Benz initiated this signature door only two models (C-111, SL Gullwing) and who could afford either of those.

Now thankfully, a re-release for the mainstream market. think of the difference of disembarking you ‘average doored car’ in a thunderstorm compared to the Gullwing!
