2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport – all things are subjective

With updated exterior styling, improved sound control, and all-wheel drive available even in the base trim, the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport sees several updates that bring it forward on the way towards its totally revamped 2014 model. With all of these improvements, though, fuel economy and the Sport title are subjective concerns.

The manufacturer says

The Outlander Sport’s 2.0-liter aluminum engine uses MIVEC technology to balance power with fuel efficiency, letting you take the road not taken a little farther.

Overview

The first impression that the 2014 Outlander Sport gives is one of fun-loving style and sophistication. Opening the door and climbing in, though, dampens some of that sophistication as plastics remain cheaply softened and relatively blank. Comfort is good, though, despite the low-end feel of the dashboard and fittings.

Seating is spacious, headroom is good, and the panoramic glass rooftop option is undeniably breathtaking.

No one will argue that Mitsubishi is a struggling car seller here in the U.S. The Outlander is one of only a handful of models that the company still sells on our shores and its dated feel and lackluster appeal have wrought havoc on its market share. To revive that, the Outlander and this smaller Sport brother were revitalized for 2013 in anticipation of a full revamp for 2014.

Those upgrades for this 2013 model go a long way towards bringing it into marketability and give the exterior a strong hint of class while the interior sees some much-needed ergonomic updates to match.

Beyond the comfortable seating, the cargo area is spacious and thoughtful cubbies are easy to find. The rear doors could swing a tad wider for easier access, but the infotainment system is easy to navigate without a manual and the split-folding rear seats make this little SUV into a versatile machine.

Fuel mileage is EPA rated at 26 mpg combined (24 city, 29 highway). Our time in the Outlander Sport proved that it’s easy to beat the city rating, but matching the highway number proved more difficult. At lower altitudes than our 5,000 feet, though, it’s likely achievable.

The economy comes from the combination of a 2.0-liter dual overhead cam (DOHC) MIVEC engine and a new continuously variable transmission (CVT). That CVT, however, is loud and a bit unnerving when pressed and the Outlander’s paltry 0-60 mph time of well over 12 seconds makes Sport a very relative term. Our standard freeway onramp test puts the Outlander Sport at the low end of the spectrum, but for drivers more interested in economy than speed, it’s more than adequate for safe merging and control.

Speaking of which, the Outlander Sport has a selectable AWD option that we found to be excellent, though the huge 4WD button placed just below the shifter is a bit out of place. Three powertrain modes are available: FWD, AWD, and AWD-split. Fuel economy is best in front-wheel drive, but on-the-fly AWD is always there should it be needed. The second AWD option splits power in a forced 50:50 front to rear.

We had snow during our test drive period and the 2013 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport did very well in the cold.

Handling is good, but not exceptional. The ride is stiff, but is actually softer than many in the small SUV market like the Toyota RAV4, but not as soft as the Kia Sportage. The drive is actually quite rewarding in urban and around town situations, but not as comfortable over the highway.

What we like

Excellent value for the package with a lot of goodies delivered for the asking price.

Good all-around performance for the segment, falling short of sporty but ahead of lame in a sort of middle ground.
