Car review: 2012 Mitsubishi Sport

By David Thomas,

The Mitsubishi Outlander was introduced for the 2011 model and despite a harsh review on it’s sold well. it shares the Outlander name, the is smaller than the regular which has been around 2003.

Last year, I shoppers to avoid the Outlander because of its maddeningly loud yet engine and a troublesome continuously automatic transmission.

For 2012, said it addressed these two specifically and delivered me a test to evaluate against its predecessor. the test car came with a transmission, not the CVT that Mitsubishi I could focus only on the so that’s what this addresses.

Thanks to its revisions, the 2012 Outlander Sport is slightly but it’s still not at the level of competitors.

For a compact crossover, 148 isn’t a lot. Competitors the Hyundai Tucson, at 165 hp, and the Nissan at 170 hp, offer more confident power and better acceleration a dead stop. The Outlander feels more like a car in its slow response.

It’s just not exemplary.

The Outlander weighs 107 pounds less the Tucson and 244 pounds less the Rogue. The lighter weight and engine certainly help fuel economy. The Outlander is rated 24/31 mpg city/highway the manual transmission and 25/31 mpg the optional CVT automatic and front-wheel

A selectable all-wheel-drive system is if you get the CVT; it’s rated mpg.

The Tucson is rated a 23/31 mpg, but that’s the optional six-speed automatic The manual transmission is rated a 20/27 mpg. The Rogue only with a CVT and is estimated to get mpg, also far below the Sport.

It’s unusual for to even offer manual as the base Outlander Sport and do. Both models feel economy car than sporty. In the I found shifting to be relatively if a bit boring. Unlike the CVT I tested year, though, I could the acceleration smoothly.

An example of man being mightier machine, I guess.

The Sport nimbly and its ride remains firm, though it’s softer than the Tucson.

And the noise? It isn’t gone, but definitely invested a few dollars to the issue. Noise still the cabin when pushing the hard, but it isn’t a constant during regular driving, as it was year.

And one editor’s spouse with no prior knowledge of the model — was annoyed by the still noticeable engine

I still caution shoppers the Outlander Sport’s engine and performance, but it isn’t the deal-breaker it was year. Unfortunately, I’m unable to offer a recommendation on the CVT. Perhaps a buyer-beware is appropriate here.

Interior and cargo Despite 4 inches shorter overall the Tucson and a surprising 14 inches than the Rogue, the Outlander passenger volume is plentiful: 98 feet versus 102 and 98 cubic respectively.

The cabin materials are for the car’s sub-$20,000 starting and while the front and rear are a bit stiff, they’re comfortable on trips. Over a long my back definitely felt

Shoppers often select a for cargo utility, and that’s the Outlander Sport’s size it most. At 21.7 cubic behind the backseat, it falls far the Tucson and Rogue, at 25.7 and cubic feet, respectively. two also beat the Sport’s cargo volume of 49.5 feet with the backseat providing 55.8 and 57.9 feet, respectively.

The Mitsubishi Outlander Sport top scores of Good in the Insurance for Highway Safety’s front- and crash tests. It hasn’t tested for rear impact or strength at this time, so not yet eligible for Top Safety Pick

Neither the 2011 or 2012 has been crash-tested by the National Traffic Safety Administration at time.

You can find a list of safety features at Cars.com.

Sport in the market At first, the Sport appears like the affordable compact crossover on the which could influence who are worried about its performance and cargo area. However, the is only a few hundred dollars while offering a more driving experience and better package.

The Outlander Sport may have a few issues that prevented us recommending it, but I’m not yet ready to it over most other in this field.
